LGBT Detroit mourns the loss of Jeff Smith, beloved manager of the iconic Woodward Bar & Grill, formerly located in Midtown Detroit.

Jeff was more than a bar manager—he was a friend, mentor, advocate, and source of refuge for generations of LGBTQ+ Detroiters. He transformed “The Woodward” into a nationally recognized gathering place, particularly welcoming young adults, transgender women, and Black LGBTQ+ Detroiters. For many, it was a place to find friendship, community, celebration, and belonging.

Jeff’s commitment extended beyond the bar. He provided housing to marginalized individuals and supported LGBT Detroit’s growth. Under his leadership, LGBT Detroit secured its first business location for more than five years, while The Woodward hosted the organization’s quarterly Tea Party and daily Membership Program. Jeff also demonstrated his generosity through significant financial support of LGBTQ+ causes, including Hotter Than July.

When The Woodward Bar & Grill was destroyed by fire, Jeff did not let the loss end his commitment to community. While working toward the bar’s future, he continued providing alternative entertainment and gathering opportunities, ensuring people still had places to connect and celebrate.

Today, LGBT Detroit honors Jeff Smith not simply for the establishment he managed, but for the community he helped build. His legacy lives in the people he welcomed, the friendships he nurtured, the safe spaces he created, and the joy he brought to countless lives.

On behalf of LGBT Detroit’s boards, advisors, staff, volunteers, and those we serve, we extend our deepest condolences to Jeff’s loved ones and the many members of our community who called him a friend.

May God bless Jeff Smith, his loved ones, and the enduring legacy he leaves within Detroit’s LGBTQ+ community.
