With its three-story central arcade, ornate frescoes with

bronze, marble, brass and golf-leaf mosaics, this beautiful building is best known for its "golden tower". Considered to be Detroit's largest art object, the Fisher Building's public corridors are lined with over 40 kinds of marble gathered from around the world and incredible hand-painted ceilings.

Hart Plaza becomes the center of the world's largest free jazz festival every Labor Day weekend. Four days. Free admission. Hundreds of thousands of people from around the world descend on one city for one reason. Jazz.

Now in its 47th year, the Detroit Jazz Festival has made a significant change for 2026. All three main stages are consolidated directly at Hart Plaza, creating a more connected, immersive, and accessible experience for the more than 300,000 people who show up every year. It started with a sketch.

Around 1928, Winold Reiss sat in his New York City studio at 108 West 16th Street and drew this by hand. Ink, graphite, and tempera on illustration board. Proposed decorations for the Fisher Building in Detroit, designed in collaboration with Albert Kahn. Sheet No. 5 of what would become one of the most detailed interior decoration programs ever executed in an American commercial building.

Every ceiling panel, every rosette medallion, every geometric border was drawn before a single craftsman arrived on site. The document now lives in the Library of Congress as part of the Winold Reiss Collection, gifted by his son in 1992.

The ceiling panels throughout the Fisher Building reflect the same geometric precision and handcrafted detail that Reiss drew nearly a century ago. Every surface in this building was considered before it was built.

Some things were simply built to last.

You have seen that roof before.

The Fisher Building has been stopping people in their tracks since 1928. Forty types of marble. A crowned tower that catches the light from every direction. Albert Kahn designed it to be the most beautiful commercial building in the world. The Architectural League of New York agreed.

It is alive and open every single day. From the mosaic tile floors to the barrel vaulted ceiling painted by Hungarian artist Géza Maróti, every surface carries an indescribable golden glow. Brass grilles. Bronze details. Painted frescoes that reward every person who slows down long enough to look up. Every visit catches a detail you missed the last time. That is not an accident. It was built that way.

The Fisher Building changed the way Detroit parked its cars.

When the garage opened alongside the building in 1928 it was unlike anything the city had seen. Built directly into the Fisher with room for 1,100 automobiles, it gave tenants on the first eleven floors something genuinely new. Park on the same floor as your office. Walk straight in. No streets, no weather, no waiting.

The real stroke of genius was the ramp. Working alongside engineers at the General Motors Proving Ground, Albert Kahn designed one of the first double helix ramp systems ever built, allowing cars to ascend and descend simultaneously on a single ramp. It was a solution so elegant that it shaped how parking structures were designed long after the Fisher opened its doors.

The uniformed attendants in this photograph tell the other part of the story. White uniforms. Hands-on service. A standard of hospitality that said arriving at this building should feel like something, whether you came through the front door or the garage.

August 1927. Seven brothers. One shovel. The beginning of everything.

Frederick, Charles, William, Lawrence, Edward, Alfred, and Howard Fisher gathered on West Grand Boulevard for the groundbreaking of what would become Detroit's largest art object. Sons of a carriage maker from Norwalk, Ohio, they arrived in Detroit two decades earlier with a trade, a work ethic, and the kind of belief in this city that turns empty ground into monuments.

They built Fisher Body into one of the most powerful manufacturing enterprises in American history. When they sold it to General Motors they did not walk away. They put that fortune back into Detroit. They hired Albert Kahn and told him to build the most beautiful commercial building in the world. No budget. No limits. Just the best of everything.

Frederick, the oldest brother, turned the first shovel of dirt that August morning with the Governor of Michigan and the Mayor of Detroit standing alongside them. Fifteen months later the Fisher Building opened its doors.

Seven brothers stood on this corner with an idea. What they built has outlasted everything around it.
