Nearly 200 years of history. ⚖️

The story of the Third Judicial Circuit includes Detroit's Mayor's Court, established in 1824, and Detroit Recorder's Court, which was formally created as a separate court in 1857.

In 1997, Detroit Recorder's Court was abolished and merged into the Third Judicial Circuit of Michigan, bringing its criminal jurisdiction into the Circuit Court.
Today, the Third Circuit serves Wayne County as Michigan's largest circuit court.
Nearly two centuries later, the mission remains the same: providing accessible and equal justice to the community.

Got a Jury Summons? Here’s What Wayne County Residents Should Know. ⚖️📋
Receiving a jury summons means you've been officially called for jury service. Don't ignore it.

If you receive a Third Circuit Court jury summons, you should:

✅ Respond within 10 days as directed on your summons.
✅ Complete the online jury questionnaire, including the required qualification and personal-history sections.
✅ Check your summons carefully for your reporting location, group number, date and time.
✅ If you need to request a postponement or excusal, contact Jury Services.

Postponements and excusals are available under specific circumstances. Jury service is generally one day or one trial. If you're not selected for a trial, your service is generally completed that day. If selected, you'll serve for the duration of the trial.

And remember: A jury summons is an official court document. Failure to appear when instructed can result in a Show Cause Hearing and potentially a contempt-of-court charge.

A Court With Deep Detroit Roots ⚖️

The Third Judicial Circuit of Michigan has a long history of serving Wayne County—and its story includes one of the oldest courts of record in the United States.
Detroit Recorder’s Court traces its origins to Detroit’s Mayor’s Court, established in 1824. It was formally created as a separate court in 1857, handling felony criminal cases in the City of Detroit along with traffic and ordinance violations.

More than a century later, Detroit Recorder’s Court was abolished and merged into the Third Judicial Circuit of Michigan on October 1, 1997. Its judges became circuit court judges, bringing its criminal jurisdiction into the Third Circuit.

Today, Third Circuit Court is the largest circuit court in Michigan, with 59 judges serving Wayne County. From Detroit’s early days to today, the Court remains an important part of the community and our system of justice.
