The best moment of tonight’s “Hometown Hero” award was when the recipient innocently walked away without realizing he was about to be recognized!

Frank McKenzie started a running group in 2017 called Run Destin. The goal of Run Destin is to create a welcoming community for runners and walkers of all shapes and sizes from all walks of life. Since beginning the group, it has grown from a handful of friends to over 3,000 members. The membership is global, made up of locals and those visiting our beautiful area.

Frank spends countless hours organizing events for many in our area to enjoy. It's easy to think Run Destin is a fitness group, and you wouldn't be wrong. However, the individual who nominated Frank — Brian Liesveld — says it best. “It’s exercise, but it’s fellowship. In a time when we see health on the decline in our country due to inactivity, Frank's group has changed the life of many people. Perhaps one of the most significant reasons I believe Frank is a Hometown Hero is because you would never know how much of his time and money he dedicates to Run Destin.”

Thank you, Frank. We honor you today! We look forward to celebrating more individuals this year as part of America 250.

The City of Destin Mayor, City Council, and Staff will be conducting a workshop on Monday, June 8th, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall Annex Council Chambers located at 4100 Indian Bayou Trail, Destin, Florida. The purpose of the workshop will be to discuss planning for the Fiscal Year 2027 budget. The public is invited to attend.

Individuals with disabilities who require assistance to participate in this meeting are requested to notify the City Clerk’s Office at (850) 837-4242 as soon as possible.
