Self-Help Closet & Pantry of Des Plaines The SHC&P of DP serves Des Plaines residents in need by providing food, clothing and personal care items.

The SHC&P of DP is open for clients from 12:30pm to 3:00pm on Tuesdays and 10:00am to 12:00pm on Saturdays. The SHC&P of DP is open for donations from 9:00am to 12:00pm on Mondays and Tuesdays and 9:00am to 10:00am on Saturdays. Our "Red Barrel" collection bins for your nonperishable food donations can be found all around town - Des Plaines City Hall, the Des Plaines Public Library, Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce plus many schools, churches and local businesses.

The 2026 National Association of Letter Carriers’ food drive is this Saturday - May 9th!

*We are looking for more drivers to support donation pickup, please email [email protected] if interested!*

Many, not all, Des Plaines residents will receive one of two types of paper bags to fill + place outside their homes for letter carriers and volunteers to collect:
- Aldi paper bag
- Plain brown paper bag

Please fill the bags from your mailbox OR a bag/box of your own for pickup until ~5pm.

Items are weighed at the Des Plaines Post Office then donated to the our organization to serve DP residents in need.

Note: If your bag is not picked up, you can drop it off at the Post Office on Oakton early next week!

Last Saturday, the Pantry received 1 ton (2,000 lbs!) of chicken from the Hunger Resource Network!

This partnership allows us to provide quality protein to our neighbors in need.

Two of our volunteers, Dave and Linda, line up early on Saturday morning in Northbrook, IL to have our van loaded with a pallet of frozen chicken twice a year!

Gusty snow showers and isolated squalls may lead to hazardous travel this evening. Dangerous cold then settles into the region Thursday night through the upcoming weekend. There is a chance of snow Saturday night into Sunday but confidence remains low.
