Those with allergies or a keen sense of smell may have already realized the Bradford Pears are blooming. The Bradford Pear is a cultivar that was developed as an ornamental tree, and was unable to self-pollinate. However, it has cross-pollinated with other species and mutated in order to become an invasive species. Bradford Pears were introduced in the U.S. in the mid-sixties, and have quickly taken over unmanaged areas, such as along I-270 and Manchester Road. In these videos from 3/13/26, the Bradford Pears stand out due to their white flowers. As an invasive species, the Bradford Pears are out-competing the native plants. The City of Des Peres is doing our part by removing all 392 Bradford Pears from our rights-of-way. So far we’ve removed about 300, with the rest to be removed by the end of the year.
