Polk County is proud to support and take part in the Joppa Village groundbreaking. Joppa Village will provide permanent, affordable homes designed specifically for people who have experienced chronic homelessness for years and have been left behind by traditional approaches. More than housing, neighbors will have the relationships, support and sense of belonging they need to rebuild their lives. The groundbreaking marks the start of construction on the first five village homes in the development.

Polk County was proud to help unveil a new mural at Conmingo Early Education Center. The mural now serves as a symbol of inclusion and belonging for immigrant, bilingual, and BIPOC families who often face barriers accessing culturally affirming spaces. The mural was made possible from funding with a Polk County Community Betterment Grant. Supervisor's Angela Connolly and Mark Holm were on hand as Conmingo students and staff showcased the finished project.

The Polk County Board of Supervisors recently declared the month of September as Recovery Month in Polk County. This proclamation sends a strong message to people who struggle with mental health or substance use where recovery is possible. It is also a reflection that our community is proud of their journey, and recognize the growing formal recovery supports in Polk County.

The Polk County Extreme Temperature Plan will be activated today (8/31/26 at noon through Saturday (9/5), based on forecast temperatures from the National Weather Service. Adjustments may be made based on updated forecasts.
Activation of the plan includes:
• Activation of cooling centers https://www.polkcountyiowa.gov/.../extreme-temperature.../
• Weather amnesty conditions at area homeless shelters
• Free access to these locations on DART buses DART

Polk County has proclaimed today (August 31, 2026) as Overdose Awareness Month. The Board of Supervisors proclaimed this occasion to honor every life lost and recognize those families that are forever changed. The proclamation also serves to tell people who use substances and are in recovery that they are valued and remind the public that overdose deaths are preventable.
