Democracy is more than Election Day.

It is the Iowan who registers to vote. The poll worker who gives up a day to serve their community. The county auditor who makes sure an election runs smoothly. The candidate who puts their name on the ballot. The student learning how our elections work for the first time.

At the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office, we work every day to help make sure Iowans can participate in our democracy.

Today, on Day of Democracy, we’re celebrating the people who make it work.

Everyone should be able to make their voice heard at the ballot box.

As we recognize Disability Rights Week and look ahead to the November 3 General Election, remember that Iowa offers accessible voting options for voters with disabilities.

Every polling place has an accessible voting machine, and curbside voting is available for voters who cannot enter the polling place. Voters may also request assistance marking or casting their ballot. Know your options and make a plan to vote this November by visiting sos.iowa.gov/disabilities.

Being a grandparent is one of life’s greatest blessings. I’m grateful for the time I get to spend with my grandchildren and the memories we make together. I always try to keep them close, including on my desk at work.

Happy Grandparents Day to grandparents across Iowa. I hope you get to spend some time with the ones who make it all worthwhile.

Today, we recognize the women in law enforcement who serve and protect our communities across Iowa and our country.

On National Police Woman Day, I’m grateful for the courage, dedication and professionalism these women bring to the job every day. Leaders like Lt. Elizabeth Quinn, pictured here, go above and beyond to help us raise awareness about human trafficking in Iowa and work toward making our state a place where trafficking has no place. Thank you for your service and for keeping Iowans safe.

Twenty-five years later, we still remember.

We remember the lives lost, the heroes who ran toward danger, and the families and communities forever changed. We will never forget.

At the Secretary of State’s Office, we strive to honor the example of those who serve by showing up, serving our communities, and doing our part to strengthen the civic life of Iowa every day.
