We know food insecurity and housing instability are inextricably connected. Costs are rising across the board and in Polk County 42% of renters are cost burdened and spending more the 30% of their income on housing, and in Central Iowa 1 in 10 Iowans are food insecure. When housing is safe and stable it drastically improves everything else, from health to employment to food stability.
We are working every day to provide affordable homeownership opportunities, as well as providing free 1-on-1 Housing Counseling to help people be successful in their housing journey. People need support from trusted experts they can rely on to help them navigate spaces that they may never have been in contact with before. Education, financial literacy, knowledge around housing is crucial to the success of a family or individual. Education allows for families to gain and maintain housing stability.
For many Iowa families, the budget doesn’t break on the big things—it breaks on the basics. When rent takes too much of a paycheck, groceries become harder to afford, and nutritious food becomes a luxury. That’s where HOME, Inc. steps in.
