☀️ Summer is here, and that means more time outside for our four legged family members.

Whether you're heading to the beach, the park, or enjoying time in the backyard, now is a great time to make sure your pet is licensed with the City of Des Moines.

A current pet license does more than meet local requirements. It helps reunite lost pets with their families through DocuPet's HomeSafe® 24/7 lost pet service and provides important identification if your pet becomes separated from you during summer activities. Valid license tags can help pets get home faster and reduce the time they spend in shelters.

All cats and dogs in the City of Des Moines are required to be licensed and vaccinated against rabies.

Getting started is easy:
🐾 Visit desmoineswa.docupet.com
🐾 License your pet online
🐾 Order a custom tag if you'd like

A few summer pet safety reminders:
• Never leave pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.
• Bring plenty of water on walks and outings.
• Check pavement temperatures before walking your dog.
• Ensure collars and tags are secure before heading out.

Let's help keep Des Moines pets safe, identified, and ready for a fun summer.

Every year, tragedies occur because a child or pet is left in a vehicle for "just a minute."

What many people don't realize is how quickly the temperature inside a parked car can become dangerous, even on a mild day. Cracking a window is not enough, and heat related emergencies can happen in minutes.

Before you walk away, take one extra look in the back seat.

*** Look Before You Lock*****

If you see a child or pet alone in a vehicle and believe they may be in distress, call 911 immediately.

A simple reminder can save a life.

Memorial Day is more than the start of summer. It is a day to remember those who never made it home.

Today, the Des Moines Police Department honors the men and women of our Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to this country. Behind every name is a family, a story, and a sacrifice that will never be forgotten.

As we spend time with family and friends this weekend, we pause to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because others were willing to give everything for them.

We remember the fallen.
We honor their sacrifice.
And we remain forever grateful.

Over the weekend following National Police Week, DMPD received a beautiful token of appreciation from local artist Brenda Beeson! 🎨🪨

Brenda, we are truly touched to be included in your unique project. Our neighbors at the Federal Way Police Department also received their own special rock!🚓💙
We are finding a special spot outside our doors for the public to admire your work. Thank you for supporting local law enforcement!

Peace Officers Memorial Day

Today, May 15, 2026, we pause to remember.

Peace Officers Memorial Day is a time to honor the law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week it falls in as National Police Week.

Here in Des Moines, flags will be flown at half-staff, and your officers will wear mourning bands to honor the fallen and recognize their sacrifice.

“We will remember not only those who have died in the line of duty, but also those who continue to serve.”

We remember not just the loss, but the impact left behind—the families, friends, and communities who continue forward without them.

At the Des Moines Police Department, we take this moment to reflect and honor those who gave everything in service to others.

They will not be forgotten.
