What is Backhaul? 🏗️

Sounds like a big yellow excavator hauling dirt, but in our world, it hauls data! Backhaul is the backbone link that hauls information from local neighborhood hubs back to the central global internet.

No hard hats required! It's just miles of high-capacity fiber doing the heavy lifting for Iowa’s schools, hospitals, and essential services.

September is National Preparedness Month! As Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management kicks off "Week 1: Be Aware," we’re reminding Iowans that staying aware requires staying connected.

As Iowa’s Emergency Support Function 2 (ESF-2) lead for communications, the ICN works behind the scenes to keep the digital backbone strong. From backing up 911 dispatch centers to keeping state public safety agencies connected during severe weather, our network ensures critical information gets where it needs to go when seconds count.

🌩️ Step 1 to being prepared: Know your local risks and sign up for emergency notifications at alert.iowa.gov.

What is a Splice Vault? Sounds like a high-tech safe in a sci-fi heist movie, right? 🕵️‍♂️💎

But we are not talking about Hollywood blockbusters. In the telecom world, a "Splice Vault" is a heavy-duty underground box used to house, organize, and protect fiber optic cables. It acts as a secure meeting point where different fiber lines are joined together or change directions safely.

At the ICN, we use splice vaults all across the state to keep our fiber network connected and protected from the elements. Iowa's wild weather is no joke, so heavy-duty precautions like these help us stay online and serve you best, rain or shine!

Follow us for more fun breakdowns of the telecom terms we use every day!
