As we move toward the Independence Day Holiday on July 4th, it is time once again to remind folks of the law with respect to the use and discharge of fireworks.

These regulations are found in Arkansas Code 20-22-711. The regulations specify that fireworks may only be sold at retail and used within the State of Arkansas from June 20th through July 10th and from December 10th through January 5th each year. The law does not specify or set the daily hours that fireworks may be shot off within those allowable date ranges. Discharging or shooting off fireworks outside of those dates constitutes a misdemeanor offense. This code provides for a fine of not less than $50 nor more than $200 or imprisonment for not more than 90 days, or both, for each offense, which would be at the discretion of the District Court.

We do not want to have to issue any citations for this and hope there will be no need to.

Also, city councils may put further restrictions on those time frames, or they may prohibit the sale or discharge of fireworks altogether inside city limits. Therefore, if you want to shoot fireworks inside the city limits of any municipality, it is highly recommended that you contact the city police or city hall in those municipalities to find out what their city regulations are. This would include the cities of Des Arc, Hazen, DeValls Bluff, and Biscoe.

If you do choose to shoot off fireworks, please be respectful of your neighbors and surroundings and be aware of potential fire hazards involved. Also, it is strongly recommended that children do so only under close adult supervision.

We hope everyone has a safe and fun Independence Day holiday this year.

ARKANSAS LAW OF THE WEEK 🚔

Protection from Secondhand Smoke for Children Act Arkansas Code § 20-27-1903

It is astonishing how many people we come in contact with that do not know that it is illegal in Arkansas to smoke in a vehicle when a child under the age of 14 is present!
Even with the windows rolled down, secondhand smoke can remain concentrated inside a vehicle and expose children to harmful toxins and pollutants. Children are especially vulnerable to the health effects of secondhand smoke, which can increase the risk of respiratory illnesses, asthma attacks, ear infections, and other serious health concerns.
📖 Arkansas Code § 20-27-1903 states:
"Smoking is prohibited in any motor vehicle with a child passenger who is less than fourteen (14) years of age."
✅ The law is simple: If a child under 14 is in the vehicle, do not smoke.
The Prairie County Sheriff's Office is committed to educating our community on Arkansas laws while helping keep our children safe and healthy.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Protect our kids. 🚭 Keep vehicles smoke-free. ⚖️ Know the law.
