It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Chris Brainard, a former member of the Echo Hose Hook & Ladder Co. 1. Chris proudly served our company for five years before continuing his calling as a career firefighter with the City of New Haven Fire Department.

Chris was the grandson of Past Captain and Past Chief LeRoy Brainard, carrying forward a family legacy deeply woven into the history and traditions of our fire company. The Brainard family’s dedication has shaped generations of firefighters who have proudly worn our patch.

Chris was only 36 years old and leaves behind his loving wife and two children. During this incredibly difficult time, we extend our deepest condolences to the entire Brainard family. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.

A letter from the New Haven Rowing Club in regards to the upcoming regatta:

October 2025

To Our Housatonic River Neighbors,

On the weekend of Oct. 11-12, the New Haven Rowing Club will host the Head of the Housatonic Regatta. Thanks to countless hours of volunteer time, and with the support of police, fire and emergency services professionals in Shelton and Oxford, this event has grown to become a major regatta on the regional rowing calendar. This year for the first time we are holding races over two days, with colleges and masters rowing clubs competing Saturday, and high school programs competing Sunday.

We recognize that this event affects you, and we sincerely thank you for your patience. We will have volunteers on the water on Oct. 10 to install the racecourse, so we ask that you be mindful of their presence. On Oct. 11-12, the river is a no-wake zone for the safety of the racing crews from 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Saturday, and 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Sunday. We will do our best to remove the racecourse buoys before nightfall Sunday.

Please note that you can expect heavier than usual vehicle traffic on Route 110 on race day, especially as boat trailers enter Indian Well State Park in the morning and leave in the late afternoon. If you are on the Shelton side of the river and are making travel arrangements for that weekend, please be aware that you may experience brief delays.

Thank you so much for letting us share this special stretch of water with these athletes and their families and friends. You can get more information and find links to the regatta schedule online at https://www.newhavenrowingclub.org/head-of-the-housatonic. If you have specific questions about regatta operations or any other subject, please write [email protected], and will get back to you promptly.

Sincerely,

Matthew Broder
President
New Haven Rowing Club

Below is an update on the w**d abatement program from Jim Olson:

We are finishing the river survey w/Office of Aquatic Invasive Species. The official report will not be available until early January so wanted to share preliminary read….

Overall, very little invasive species. In 2017 we started with 153 acres of invasive. I expect this year we will end with less than 5 acres.

Eelgrass is a big problem as I expected. Yearly trend shows increasing year over year. Last year we ended with 53 acres of eelgrass. I expect this year to be similar. Current program for eelgrass is not working. I will be working new options with Solitude (our w**d abatement contractor) for next year.

Overall, Wholand (upper Birchbank) is better, but still problematic.
Birchbark ended with a new unique situation whereas we have a heavy combination of eelgrass, pondw**d and mat algae. I don't know enough here to comment further other than we need to do something for this new position. It’s very problematic.
Lower Grove has substantial eelgrass. Per above, we will be seeking new options to handle next year.

Overall, way better than where we started. Overall health in my view is good. Work to do to address the problem areas that we are seeing.

Regards,
Jim Olson

W**d Abatement Program Update

The Lake Housatonic w**d treatment program, now in its 8th year, continues its collaborative efforts with CT DEEP, Solitude Lake Management, OAIS, and First Light to manage invasive and nuisance aquatic plant species.
Utilizing biannual surveys to guide treatments, the program has seen notable success reducing invasive Eurasian milfoil, while ongoing challenges persist with non-invasive species like Eelgrass, which cannot be treated as aggressively due to state limitations.

Below is a link to the LHA website w**d abatement program. You can get greater detail into the program as well as review the w**d survey reports done by the state:
