Derby Greenway

Derby Greenway The Derby Greenway stretches for 1.7 miles along the banks of the Naugatuck and Housatonic Rivers in Derby, CT. The City of Derby clears snow during the winter.

It is the first section of the Naugatuck River Greenway which will eventually stretch more than 40 miles between Derby and Torrington. According to the Connecticut Trail Census which measures 29 trails throughout the state, the Derby Greenway is the most heavily used of all the trails. The Derby Greenway also links to the Shelton Riverwalk across the Housatonic River via the Derby/Shelton Bridge.

Plans are underway to renovate the bridge and make it more accommodating to walkers and cyclists. The trail is open 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset.

The Derby Greenway hosts the Derby Hall of Fame on the plaza at the Division Street entrance. Today, the 20th anniversary class for the Derby Hall of Fame chosen by the Hall of Fame Committee was announced bringing the number of Hall members to 72. The official announcement was made just as Derby's 350th birthday year comes to an end on May 13. Each of the members is memorialized with a brick on the plaza at the entrance to the Greenway.
The three members of the Class of 2026 includes business and medical leaders in Derby. One operated a circulating library in his business before public libraries existed in Derby. Another was a true pioneer and inventor in the automobile industry and the third was a senior surgeon at Griffin Hospital, had his own private hospital and even was Chairman for Derby’s Tercentenary Committee!
