We grow up learning about the big impacts made by Rosa Parks and other leaders of civil rights movements.

But what’s often overlooked is the inter-community resistance - the countless unsung heroes and organizers and what I would call “my people” who resisted the inequities of our transportation system on a daily basis, impacted their ability to move freely.

Traffic safety has played a huge role in the struggles of marginalized and oppressed communities, from highways and transit access to the basic, ultimate ability to move.

That’s why I’m so focused on the Freedom to Move for youth at the margins.

The Freedom to Move in no way is just about creating a safe and sustainable transportation system.

It’s about getting young people like me to witness leadership and community transformation beyond the sidewalks, beyond the bus stops - but in the critical youth power.

Happy Black History Month! ✊🏾

For anyone who’s new here, I’d like to re-introduce myself.

I go by Jacob or Jas. I’m currently the Executive Director of NOYS, and spearheading the Freedom to Move recent efforts.

Over the past three years, I’ve been leading in the transformation of a 25 year-old organization with a rich history in youth traffic safety.

I started off as the only employee, and never got to truly share the presence and culture of transforming this organization.

It’s time I truly express the roots of why our work is so powerful, and for you to get insights on where we’re headed. After this, who knows where we’ll be headed. 😜

For the rest of the month - Here’s to insights from a Black-Led national organization that is transforming how we move! ✊🏾

"A breath of fresh air." That’s how Mara Benitez, an engineer in our Denver office, described her experience at NYTECx2024—a conference alive with youthful energy and a shared passion for transportation safety and equity.

For Mara, it was also a reminder of her journey to Toole Design and what's possible when we’re bold enough to ask questions and bring fresh perspectives to the industry. As a Gen Z engineer, Mara is bringing her values to work and helping to drive change in transportation planning and design.

Thanks to NOYS - National Organizations for Youth Safety for spotlighting Mara’s story and for their ongoing work in amplifying younger voices. Read Mara's reflections here. 👉 https://tooledesign.com/insights/2024/10/a-breath-of-fresh-air-bringing-change-to-the-transportation-industry/
