🍑Roots of the Grand Valley Ag Tour Part 2:
After lunch, we headed to Blaine's Farm Store, a local farm-direct destination for year-round locally-grown produce. They have their own greenhouses, you-pick vegetables, fruits, and flowers, and they just started their own orchard. We then headed to Sweet Cheeks Organic Peaches where we heard about the benefits and challenges of growing organic fruit. We were able to pick and sample off the trees, and... I then bought 2 cases of peaches to bring home! We ended our tour at Davis Family Farms where we spoke with the owner who coordinates the sale of all of the Palisade Peach Fundraisers we have up and down the Front Range!

I'm very grateful for the opportunity to have learned more about the Palisade peach and related industries on the Western Slope, the families who work and support them, and the celebrations and challenges they face both this year and over many years. Water, workforce, and regulations were common themes of challenges, but everyone we heard from was also so positive about what they're doing and the support they give each other there in the Grand Valley! 🍑

🍑Saturday's Roots of the Grand Valley Tour Part 1:
We started the day at Palisade Basecamp & RV Resort where we heard from the young couple owners who returned to the Western Slope after college to start their agritourism business. We then went to the Orchard Mesa Irrigation District where we learned about their water management system and incredible hydro-powered pumps. After that, we toured Talbott Farms where the owners talked to us about their partnerships with other local orchards, CSU Extension and a power company partnership with a 1st in the nation experimental orchard solar panel array! We also toured their packing facility and learned about their diversified business evolution. Lunch was at Peachfork Orchard & Vineyard where we heard from local chamber, airport, and agriculture representatives including Colorado Ag champion Janie VanWinkle!

I'm on the Western Slope this weekend for an Agriculture tour of a number of orchards and related Ag businesses. I'm excited to learn more about the orchard industry and especially about the challenges they're dealing with in Palisade, Grand Junction, and surrounding areas! Friday night dinner featured locally-sourced meats, fish, fruits, and vegetables with the famous Palisade Peaches highlighted in several dishes. Saturday is Palisade's Zip Code Day (8/15/26) AND Congressman Jeff Hurd's and my birthday!

Many thanks to the Adams County Detention Facility for inviting me to see their Adult GED program and speak with students and graduates! Research shows that recidivism decreases when incarcerated individuals complete their education/GED and they gain skills and hope for gainful employment upon release.

It was exciting to be at the Ribbon Cutting for the University of Northern Colorado, UNC 's new College for Osteopathic Medicine! 81 students will be in this inaugural class, and hopefully this 3rd medical school in Colorado will help address our critical shortages of Medical Doctors and healthcare providers! 💙💛🐻

Colorado Ag in the Classroom Day 3: We started our day at The Fiber Factory in LaSalle where we learned about how alpaca wool, sheep wool, angora hair, silk, and other fibers are processed from raw materials to beautiful yarns that produce fantastic home-crafted items. We then traveled to Evans to Innovative Foods where we observed meat processing and discussed the ebbs and flows of the industry as well as the regulations that affect them. After that, we traveled back to the Central Colorado Water Conservancy District office where we had a Q&A with a panel of Ag experts and topped off the day with *Ag Legend Dr. John Matsushima* and his daughter and son-in-law who read Rachel Gable's book about him and shared more about his incredible life and history in Colorado Agriculture!

HUGE thanks to Cyndi Hofmeister and her team for letting me join the Colorado Agriculture in the Classroom Summer Institute this week! The connections made with teachers and the experiential learning will support my work as Representative for HD65 on the Education and Agriculture, Water and Natural Resources Committees!
