Bringing Opportunity Closer to Home
Transportation, technology, language barriers, unfamiliar systems, and simply not knowing where to begin can all stand between someone and the support they need. That’s why Hope Communities brings resources directly into the communities we serve, connecting people with practical support where relationships and trust already exist.

On Wednesday, September 16, Hope will host its 2nd Annual Employment & Housing Fair.

From 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, residents and community members can connect directly with employers and explore employment opportunities, learn about housing options, and learn about the many types of program support and resources Hope Communities can provide.

The event will be rounded out with one of our Food Distributions from 12:00 to 1:00 pm and a vaccine clinic, sponsored by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Participation in all the elements of this special day is open to all and free of charge.

Know someone who could benefit from these resources? Please pass this information along. Whether someone is looking for employment support, navigating housing challenges, accessing food, or seeking health resources, we want our community to know that these services are available. Our programs and services are open to residents and non-residents alike.

This quarter, we’re highlighting a few incredible staff members whose experience, commitment, and years of service at Hope Communities make our work possible.

Martina Torres– A Woman of Many Titles: Martina has been part of Hope since July 2019 and has taken on many roles along the way. Today, as Manager of Family Support Services & Youth Programs, she brings her experience across Hope’s programs together to support our residents, families, and youth.

Raymundo Ceniceros – 25 Years of Experience at Hope: Ray has been part of Hope Communities since September 2000 and brings extensive HVAC and mechanical expertise to his work as Maintenance Lead at Hidden Brook. After more than 25 years at Hope, his knowledge of our properties and the communities that call them home is hard to match.

Stephanie Urban – Keeping Hope on Track: Stephanie joined Hope on September 11, 2009, and serves as our Controller. She is more comfortable being viewed as a key member of the team rather than being singled out. Working largely behind the scenes, her financial knowledge and careful oversight help keep Hope running and support the programs, properties, and people at the center of our mission.

As we head into fall, Hope Communities is continuing to expand the resources and opportunities available to the people we serve. Through community partnerships, educational programs, coaching, and health services, we help families take the next steps toward greater stability, well-being, and opportunity.

One example is Tent Topics, which began during the pandemic when Hope needed to find new ways to stay connected with the community. Over time, it became a way to distribute food and basic needs, connect community members with navigators, and a place where community members access resources to support their overall health and wellness.

Today, nearly two dozen community partners participate in Tent Topics, connecting families with information about childcare, education, health and wellness, civic engagement, public safety, legal support, economic stability, nutrition education, and more.

Bringing resources into the community can make a meaningful difference for those who may not have reliable transportation, access to technology, or the time and knowledge needed to navigate complicated systems on their own. Any community member in need of healthy, fresh food can attend the biweekly sessions for free.

That same approach continues this fall with more opportunities for our community:

BMO Financial Literacy Training — Beginning September 3
The series will begin with Banking & Savings, providing participants with the practical knowledge and tools to understand their finances and work toward their economic goals.

CU Denver Dental Clinic Screening — Scheduled during September at Hidden Brook & Northglenn, and October for the Gardens
The clinic will bring dental students directly into the community to provide screenings, cleanings, and fluoride treatments, helping to make an important health resource more accessible to residents.

Together, these opportunities reflect Hope’s belief that stability is not built on a single resource or program. It grows when people have access to the housing, financial resources, health care, education, and relationships they need to move forward.

We are also excited to welcome Christine Betts, our new Volunteer Coordinator, to the Hope team. Christine will be helping strengthen our volunteer program and create more opportunities for community members to get involved in supporting Hope’s residents and programs.

We are happy to have her joining us and look forward to the relationships and connections she will help build across our volunteer community.

Did you know that children who grow up in refugee camps or under-resourced communities often bring some of the highest academic motivation and resilience into the classroom, yet face a major invisible barrier?

It’s called the exposure gap.

That’s why our Self-Discovery Journey meets our youth right where they are, taking them out of the classroom and directly into the community.

By walking alongside our students and bringing them behind the scenes into active offices, laboratories, and creative spaces across Denver, we give them:
Real-World Connections: Seeing daily operations firsthand takes the mystery out of different fields. It helps students build real confidence and shows them that these career paths are open to them, too.

Boosted Classroom Motivation: Studies show that when kids see how school lessons apply to real-world jobs, they feel more connected to their studies and stay more engaged in the classroom.

Ignited Passion & Direction: Giving youth the chance to explore different work environments helps them discover what they love, recognize their own strengths, and start building a path toward a bright future.

Opportunities like this reflect how important it is to give young people spaces to imagine new possibilities and believe their dreams are achievable. We are especially grateful to Awaka Group for sponsoring and supporting this journey and helping create meaningful opportunities for our youth!

Fun Things Happening for Hope Families This Week

Backpacks at Hope: To help our students get ready for the new school year, we have been handing out backpacks to kids at all our properties. All the supplies required by schools for each child are incredibly expensive, and we don't want our kids to be singled out for not having the essential tools they need to succeed. We believe that each backpack is a reminder to our youth that they have an entire community standing behind them.

National Night Out at City Park Pavilion: On Tuesday, August 4th, Hope Communities joined DPS at City Park for their largest National Night Out event ever! Our team had a blast connecting with local families while enjoying everything from Dunkin and Federales food trucks to the Denver Zoo ambassador animals, Denver Fire’s prevention simulator, and even a meet-and-greet with the Denver Police robot dog.

Youth Trivia Night in Northglenn: We also hosted a fantastic Trivia Night for our kids at our Northglenn office! A huge thank you to Shamim, our wonderful Northglenn Community Navigator, for hosting such a fun evening for our youth to hang out, test their knowledge, and build community.

Did you know that, according to public health data, transportation costs, rigid work schedules, and complex insurance rules are three of the biggest reasons low-income families miss out on preventive health care? When you’re choosing between taking time off work or keeping food on the table, routine medical care often gets pushed to the background.

At Hope Communities, we believe that providing stable housing is just the foundation; true community care requires a holistic, relationship-based approach that supports every aspect of our residents' well-being. Housing stability and health equity go hand in hand.

That’s why we teamed up with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) mobile public health team to bring essential care directly to our families’ front doors. By integrating a pop-up health clinic into our regular food distribution program, residents picked up fresh groceries and received 100% free vaccines in a single visit. This clinic provided essential immunizations, including required vaccines for kids heading back to school and required immunizations for immigrant family pathways.

By ensuring these services require no health insurance and offer on-site multilingual translation, CDPHE helped us remove the systemic, high-friction barriers that so often hold our families back.

Meeting people where they are with dignity, trust, and practical resources is at the heart of our mission. By partnering with organizations like CDPHE, we go beyond physical shelter to create a safe, healthy, and supported neighborhood where every family has the opportunity to thrive.

The past several weeks have been busy and full of fun for children at The Gardens and Hidden Brook. Through Hope Communities’ Summer Day Camps, youth had the opportunity to learn, explore their community, spend time with friends, and enjoy new experiences.

At The Gardens, children ages 6–12 took part in activities focused on art, STEM, nature, science, community service, and fun. They also enjoyed weekly field trips to places including the Denver Zoo, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Ekar Farm, Lava Island, the Central Park Pool, and a roller-skating rink.

At Hidden Brook, youth participated in games, gardening, arts and crafts, healthy living activities, and projects that encouraged teamwork and creativity. They also visited Ekar Farm and spent a day swimming, fishing, and enjoying a picnic at Cherry Creek Reservoir.

Summer camp gave kids a safe place to learn, spend time with friends, try new activities, and enjoy their summer.

We are also looking forward to our upcoming Kids Day, which will bring children and families together for another day of fun and community before the new school year begins.

This Wednesday, we hosted a Community Safety Meeting at Hidden Brook in Denver's East Colfax neighborhood, bringing together approximately 40 residents, community partners, and representatives from agencies including the Denver Police Department. The meeting provided an opportunity to share public safety updates, hear from community agencies, and engage in meaningful conversations about the neighborhood's strengths and ongoing challenges.

One of the most encouraging outcomes was the continued commitment of neighbors to work together. Residents are meeting regularly to share information, the Neighborhood Watch continues to grow stronger and more effective, and the bi-weekly meetings between neighbors and community partners are building trust and improving communication. These collective efforts are making a real difference in strengthening the community.

At the same time, one critical issue continues to demand urgent attention: road safety.

For months, residents have raised serious concerns about recent street changes implemented by the City's Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI). In February, we notified both DOTI and City officials about the lack of community engagement and advance notice surrounding significant traffic pattern changes in the neighborhood. Streets that had long operated as one-way corridors were converted to two-way traffic across several blocks without adequate signage, communication, or input from the residents most affected.

The neighborhood did not request these changes, and the consequences have been significant. Residents have reported vehicle collisions, multiple near-misses involving children crossing into the neighborhood park, and ongoing confusion, creating unsafe conditions for everyone using these streets. Despite repeated communications from residents over the past five months, these concerns remain largely unaddressed.

Community engagement must be more than a stated value; it must be reflected in how decisions are made. Residents deserve to be informed, heard, and included when changes directly affect the safety of their families and neighborhoods.

The East Colfax community is once again inviting DOTI to attend a neighborhood meeting to explain the rationale behind these changes, listen to residents' concerns, and work collaboratively toward solutions that improve safety for everyone.

Hope Communities stands with our residents as they advocate for a safer neighborhood. In keeping with our commitment to building strong, connected communities, we will continue supporting our neighbors as they raise their voices, engage in civic dialogue, and work toward meaningful improvements that protect the well-being of all who live in East Colfax.
Safe neighborhoods are built through partnership, accountability, and listening to the people who call them home.

MANY THANKS to Don’s Garage Doors for supporting our safety meeting series.
