Colorado Division for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind

Colorado Division for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind SENSE Colorado (also known as CDDHHDB) provides essential government services and support to the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind communities.

We connect people with support and resources. Senate Bill 00-194 created the commission in July 2000. The purpose was to address the needs of the deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind communities. Did you know?
~ More than 755,569 Coloradans are deaf or hard of hearing.
~ Nearly 1,200 Coloradans identify as DeafBlind.
~ Around 200 babies are born in Colorado with hearing differences each year. Our

staff manages daily operations under the director. Certified state employees serve as subject matter experts in their roles. A seven-member commission appointed by the governor advises staff on actions quarterly. Commissioners serve terms of four years each. The commission supports effective communication for everyone. We envision a barrier-free Colorado.

This week is Learning Disability Week! 💡

This is a great time to learn about learning disabilities, celebrate the strengths of those who have them, and work together to make everyday life more accessible.

A learning disability (such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, or ADHD) changes how a person learns and understands information. Living in a world that is not built for how your brain works can be tough, but it also brings unique strengths, deep creativity, and new ways of solving problems. We need to make sure our schools, jobs, and communities give everyone the right tools and support so they can succeed.

To help celebrate this week, we are spotlighting Peak Parent Center, a Colorado nonprofit helping individuals with all types of disabilities. They offer free resources to help families navigate special education and advocate for full inclusion in schools and communities. If you need support, visit peakparent.org.

Let's continue to champion understanding, support, and equal opportunities for everyone!

Happy Juneteenth! Today we celebrate Freedom Day by honoring the history, resilience, and profound contributions of Black Americans.

For this holiday, we want to spotlight the National Black Deaf Advocates, Inc. (NBDA) . Created in 1982 by Black Deaf leaders, the NBDA is the main group standing up for thousands of Black Deaf and hard of hearing people across the country. Their goal is to help Black Deaf individuals become leaders, find good jobs and education, and get fair treatment and healthcare. As we celebrate this important day, we invite you to learn more about Black Deaf history and support the great work of the NBDA.

Please note that our state offices are closed today in observance of the holiday.

Representation in literature matters! Today, we are spotlighting just a few incredible, highly acclaimed books featuring characters and authors from the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind communities.

While there are many fantastic books out there to explore, we wanted to highlight a handful of celebrated stories to help you start your reading list. Seeing accurate and authentic representation in books helps build understanding, empathy, and a stronger sense of belonging.

Whether you are looking for a fun graphic novel, an inspiring memoir, or historical fiction, these stories offer wonderful perspectives:
- Haben: The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law by Haben Girma: A powerful "own voices" memoir by the first Deafblind person to graduate from Harvard Law School.
- Dad, Jackie, and Me by Myron Uhlberg: Written by a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), this heartwarming, award-winning story shares a boy's experience bonding with his Deaf father over their shared love for baseball and Jackie Robinson.
- Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly: A beautiful, award-winning story about a Deaf girl who feels a deep connection to a whale that cannot communicate with other whales, leading her to create a song just for him.
- Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly: A Newbery Medal-winning novel told from multiple perspectives, including Valencia, a resourceful and brave girl who is Deaf.
- Show Me a Sign by Ann Clare LeZotte: Written by a Deaf librarian and author, this gripping historical fiction novel explores the thriving, real-life Deaf community of Martha's Vineyard in 1805.
- El Deafo by Cece Bell: A fantastic, Newbery Honor-winning graphic novel based on the author's own childhood experiences with hearing loss and navigating school.
Check out these wonderful stories at your local library or bookstore to learn, connect, and celebrate these diverse voices!

Happy National Flag Week! ✨

Did you know that Flag Day (June 14) marks the exact day in 1777 when the United States adopted its very first official flag design?

Every year, the week of June 14 is dedicated to celebrating the history and meaning behind the Stars and Stripes. The design we recognize today is a timeline of our history: the 50 white stars represent our 50 states, and the 13 red and white stripes stand for the original 13 colonies.

Whether you are flying a flag at home or just taking a moment to reflect, this is a wonderful time to show your civic pride and celebrate a symbol that unites us.

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. This is an important time to talk about brain health and the need for clear, easy-to-find information for deaf older adults living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or memory loss.

Too often, deaf seniors and their families have a hard time getting the medical help, education, and support they need in American Sign Language (ASL). We need to fix this gap!

Thankfully, groups like Seniors of America (DSA) are fighting hard to make sure our deaf seniors get fair and accessible resources.

As recently shared through DSA Connect, getting the right information in ASL can change lives. Did you know that we can actually control up to 45% of our risk for getting dementia? By learning about proven ways to keep our brains healthy, our community can see how small daily choices keep our minds sharp at any age.

Let's work together to make sure deaf seniors have the ASL support and resources they need to live well as they get older! 💜🧠

We have an important legislative update! 📜 On June 2, Governor Jared Polis signed House Bill 26-1109 into law.
Here is a quick breakdown of what this means for the community:

What does this bill do?
- It authorizes a statewide study to see if the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind community needs stronger consumer protections when using sign language interpreting services in Colorado.

How will the study work?
By July 1, 2027, a third-party researcher will be hired to:
- Conduct Interviews: They will hold fully accessible interviews with a diverse group of community members, interpreters, and language service companies.
- Review Data: They will look into whether unregulated interpreting causes harm and review how other states regulate the interpreting profession.

When will we see the results?
- The researcher will submit a final report with their findings and recommendations by July 1, 2028.

We will keep you updated as this process begins over the next year!
