Indigenous Resistance to the OIL Sands- Denver

Indigenous Resistance to the OIL Sands- Denver Oil Sands = Genocide in Progress TUESDAY (October 25) -
Meet outside the Tivoli Student Union, on the Auraria campus, downtown Denver. BRING RAIN GEAR.

There is an open-air stage between the Tivoli and the PE/Events building (right next to the flag poles). We will meet there, and march to near the Pepsi Center where Obama will be attending a $5000 per person reception and dinner.

*If you cannot come until later because of work or school, come when you can. In addition, a delegation from the Oglala Sioux Tribe (OST), including OST Vice-President

Tom Poor Bear, will be traveling to join us. There is concerted opposition to Keystone-XL, from Pine Ridge and other members of the Lakto/Dakota/Nakota Nations, who will be directly affected by this environmental disaster. Please join us, surely, if people can travel hundreds of miles from Pine Ridge and Rosebud, we can travel across town to send a loud message to Obama. We will be staged outside the Pepsi Center, either on Auraria Parkway or on Speer, until the dinner is over -- probably until 6 pm.

***Brings signs that oppose the tar sands, and Keystone-XL pipeline, or other signs in support of indigenous peoples' rights. WEDNESDAY (October 26th)-
At 8 am, Auraria Events Center, Auraria Campus, downtown Denver. This will be the closest that any of us will actually get to Obama before his administration makes a decision on the Keystone-XL pipeline. It is important to send him a clear, loud message in support on indigenous peoples' rights to a clean environment, respect for our treaty rights, our right to self-determination and control of our natural resources. It might be snowing on Wednesday morning, but do not let a little snow deter us -- the light-rail runs right to the campus, and just dress warmly!

The oil sands are located in Alberta, Canada on Indigenous territory. The land is being heavily exploited for oil crude- the dirtiest of all oils and it's coming to our indigenous and non-indigenous lands in the United States. At least five Indian reservations will be affected but another concern is the Ogallala Aquifer. This aquifer supplies water to eight states and the proposed pipeline, the Keystone XL ( the Goliath of all pipelines), will be passing right through the aquifer. Pipelines aren't made to last forever, they are bound to break and spill, we're all familiar with the BP spill in the gulf last spring, imagine a spill in our drinking water. The Keystone XL pipeline proposal is sitting on Mr. President Obama's desk right now, waiting to be approved, or denied. Resistance to the pipeline proposal will be waiting for him at the Pepsi Center Tuesday, October 25th- we're here to tell Obama we don't want the pipeline coming down into the U.S. Come hold Obama accountable for his 2008 campaign promises:
“The issue of climate change is one that we ignore at our own peril. … And unless we free ourselves from a dependence on fossil fuels and chart a new course on energy in this country, we are condemning future generations to global catastrophe." - Barack Obama

Now, We leave you with a Cree Proverb:
"Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we can't eat money."

Our First Nations brothers and sisters have been working together to oppose the Northern Gateway pipeline- a pipeline that would deliver tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada to China. This is a short-term victory, as is the Keystone XL pipeline delay.

The joint review panel hearing submissions on the controversial Northern Gateway oil pipeline to the B.C. coast will take a year longer than expected to deliver its final report.

Thank you Creator for giving us another day to walk this Earth. Today shouldn't be any special to give thanks for that. This day is not to be celebrated, but it's to remember our ancestors and relatives that would of been, as we continue to face those same struggles, as indigenous peoples, everyday. That is something we can't and should not forget.

A pretty good read on the Keystone XL project and our action today at Obama's speech. The nameless Indigenous resistance protesters include Thomas Poor Bear- Vice president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and members from the American Indian Movement of Colorado. None of these articles are stating who we are

President Barack Obama said Wednesday his administration has made no decision on whether a Canadian company can proceed with plans for a transnational oil pipeline to Texas.
