Meet Jeff Klaus, one of 12 Catholic Charities Team Samaritan cyclists preparing to take on Ride Across America this October! 🚴‍♂️ Cycling has been part of Jeff’s life for as long as he can remember — first introduced to him by his parents and later shared with his own children. Over the years, it has come to represent much more than a recreational activity. For Jeff, cycling represents the blessings of family, health and community — blessings he now hopes to use to make a difference for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. “I am riding across America to share my blessings and remind us all that the homeless are people with dignity, stories and hope just as deserving of respect and opportunity as anyone else,” Jeff shared. Beginning October 4, Jeff and his fellow Team Samaritan riders will travel from San Diego, California, to St. Augustine, Florida, taking on 3,000 miles and approximately 79,000 vertical feet of climbing along the way. Their mission is to raise critical funds for Catholic Charities Samaritan House and awareness for neighbors experiencing homelessness. This journey is especially meaningful as Samaritan House celebrates 40 years of serving Colorado. Since opening its doors in 1986, Samaritan House has grown to five locations across Colorado, continuing to provide shelter, meals, support and dignity to our neighbors. What a totally rad night celebrating 40 years of Catholic Charities Samaritan House! 🎉 This weekend, we went back to the ’80s for Catholic Charities Sam’s Totally Rad Supper, bringing together friends, supporters and community partners to celebrate a milestone four decades in the making. Since opening our doors in Denver in 1986, Samaritan House has grown to five locations across Colorado, providing shelter, meals, support and dignity to our neighbors experiencing homelessness. The evening was filled with plenty of ’80s fun, but also some incredibly meaningful moments. We honored Theo Schwartz, founder and executive director of Big Heart Art, with the 2026 Courtney Saeman Award and the Capuchin Franciscans, Province of Saint Conrad, with the 2026 He Comes to Serve Award. Former Samaritan House Fort Collins participant Rhonda Merrick also returned with her band, Roots La Roux, to share her story through music, including a special performance of “Catholic Charities Bed,” a song she wrote while experiencing homelessness. We were grateful to have Archbishop James R. Golka join us for the celebration and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston share a special video message in support of Samaritan House. Most importantly, thank you to everyone who has been part of these 40 years — our staff, volunteers, donors, partners and friends. Because of YOU, Samaritan House continues to support our neighbors and transform lives every day! From the garden to the table! 🌱🥒 The garden at Catholic Charities Marisol Homes is thriving, and families are beginning to enjoy the fruits—and vegetables—of their hard work! Each week, participants come together for garden-inspired arts and crafts and prepare a meal or snack using fresh ingredients they’ve harvested themselves. Recently, families picked zucchini straight from the garden and turned their harvest into delicious zucchini pancakes! 🥞 But the garden is growing much more than fresh food. It’s creating opportunities for learning, creativity, healthy eating and community building as families care for the plants, try new recipes and enjoy what they’ve grown together. Marisol Homes provides safe and secure emergency and extended-stay shelter for pregnant women and single women with children, walking alongside families as they work toward greater stability. In addition to safe shelter, families receive support including maternity care, case management, child care services and classes ranging from prenatal support to job skills and financial education. Meet Paul Doherty, one of 12 Catholic Charities Team Samaritan cyclists preparing to take on Ride Across America this October! 🚴‍♂️ For Paul, saying yes to nearly 3,000 miles across the country wasn’t an immediate decision. But encouragement from his fellow riders and his wife, along with memories of his father, helped him realize this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Paul remembers his father, who passed away in 2024, often talking about how his ideal holiday would be a bicycle trip. Years later, Paul is preparing for a much bigger ride of his own—and he’s using every mile to give back. Beginning October 4, Team Samaritan will ride from San Diego, California, to St. Augustine, Florida, taking on 3,000 miles and approximately 79,000 vertical feet of climbing along the way. Their mission: raising critical funds for Catholic Charities Samaritan House and awareness for neighbors experiencing homelessness. This year is especially meaningful as Samaritan House celebrates 40 years of serving Colorado. Since opening its doors in 1986, Samaritan House has grown to five locations in Colorado, with more than 225,000 nights of shelter provided annually at our Denver location alone. What does it look like to create school communities where students of all abilities are welcomed, supported and given the opportunity to thrive? On this episode of Respect Life Radio, Catholic Charities Respect Life’s Emma Ramirez sits down with Gerard Graveline, executive director of the FIRE Foundation of Denver, to talk about the importance of inclusion in Catholic schools. Gerard shares how the FIRE Foundation helps schools better serve students with disabilities through educational resources, teacher training and funding for special education professionals. Together, Emma and Gerard explore how welcoming students of all abilities recognizes the dignity of every person, strengthens the entire school community and gives students the opportunity to learn and grow alongside one another. Gerard also shares his own journey of faith and leadership and offers practical ways families, parishes and individuals can help build more welcoming and inclusive communities. Sometimes, a little beauty can make a big difference. 🌸🌿 On the second-floor patio at Catholic Charities Samaritan House in Denver, two 72-foot garden beds have been transformed into a colorful, welcoming space for our neighbors to enjoy. What was once an overlooked area filled with river rock is now home to approximately 120 plants selected to thrive in Colorado’s full sun and dry conditions. The transformation was made possible in part through a generous $5,000 beautification grant from the Colorado Garden Foundation , along with the hard work of volunteers, donors and Samaritan House staff who helped prepare the beds, dig, plant and bring the space to life. Participants staying at Samaritan House have shared how much they appreciate having a peaceful place to walk alongside the flowers, connect with nature and enjoy a moment of calm. The new garden beds also carry special meaning as Samaritan House celebrates 40 years of serving our Colorado community. During our 40th anniversary celebration in August, the gardens were dedicated to the countless volunteers who have given their time and care to Samaritan House throughout the past four decades. Since opening in Denver in 1986, Samaritan House has grown to five locations, walking alongside women, families and veterans experiencing homelessness. That growth—and transformations like this one—are possible because of a YOU, a community that continues to show up for our neighbors. Meet Jim Brown, one of the riders taking on Catholic Charities Team Samaritan’s Ride Across America this October. 🚴‍♂️ For Jim, cycling has become more than a sport—it’s become a way to serve. What once gave him space for personal reflection has grown into an opportunity to put his faith into action and advocate for neighbors we serve. This October, Jim and his fellow Team Samaritan riders will put that call into action as they cycle from San Diego to St. Augustine, Florida—3,000 miles in just 45 days, with 79,000 vertical feet of climbing along the way. Their goal is just as big as the ride: raise $2 million to support Catholic Charities Samaritan House’s five locations across Colorado and other homeless shelters in communities along their route. When CU Boulder students recently spent time volunteering at Catholic Charities Samaritan House, sandwiches were on the menu—but their experience went far beyond preparing lunch. The students joined us through Sko Serve, CU Boulder’s service program that connects students with opportunities to serve local communities while learning more about the issues impacting the people around them. Their day began with a tour of Samaritan House, where they learned more about homelessness in Denver, the people we serve and the work happening every day to provide shelter, meals, resources and pathways toward stability. Then, they rolled up their sleeves to prepare sandwiches and assemble sack lunches for our neighbors. Making a sandwich may seem like a small act, but each lunch helps meet one of life’s most basic needs. And for these students, the experience was also an opportunity to connect service with a deeper understanding of why that service matters. Thank you to the CU Boulder students who gave their time, asked questions, learned alongside us and served our neighbors with purpose. We’re grateful for community partners who recognize that showing up to serve can also be an opportunity to listen, learn and grow. What can a purse carry? For the women of SHE Leads, much more than everyday essentials. 💙For the fourth year, SHE Leads Group returned to Catholic Charities Samaritan House with thoughtfully filled purses for women experiencing homelessness. The tradition is part of the SHE Leads Purse Project, an initiative that began in Denver in 2020 with a simple idea: women supporting women. Each purse is filled with practical necessities like shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, period products and socks, along with special touches like jewelry, makeup and other small gifts chosen to help each woman feel seen and cared for. This year, four SHE Leads members personally delivered the purses to Samaritan House. Participants lined the hallway as the team handed out the gifts, creating a joyful and celebratory atmosphere. The group even brought trays of cookies to share with participants. A purse may seem like a simple gift, but this annual tradition carries an important message to the women we serve: you matter, you are worth caring for and you have not been forgotten. Thank you to SHE Leads and the members who have continued this meaningful tradition with Samaritan House for four years!
