What happens when nonprofit status is shaped by politics instead of policy?

That’s the question behind Senate Bill 9, which has now passed the legislature and is headed to Governor Jared Polis' desk.

For years, Colorado has aligned its nonprofit tax status with federal 501(c)(3) determinations. But alignment shouldn’t mean losing the ability to make decisions at the state level, especially when federal actions may shift.

Senate Bill 9 offers a balanced approach: maintaining accountability while reducing unintended consequences for nonprofits serving our communities.

Our President & CEO, Paul Lhevine, explores this further in an op-ed with Tom Downey in The Colorado Sun.

If you care about the long-term stability of Colorado’s nonprofit sector, this is worth your time. Visit the link in the comments.

Nonprofits don’t have to sit on the sidelines of public policy.

As state legislative sessions advance, nonprofits can play an active role by educating legislators, providing nonpartisan analysis, and advocating for issues tied to their mission. While federal funds can’t be used for lobbying, nonprofits may use other funds to engage responsibly.

In Colorado, nonprofits that lobby are required to file monthly reports with the Colorado Secretary of State. Now is the perfect time to make sure your organization understands the rules and knows how to engage effectively and compliantly to drive positive change.

The Energized Executive Director Reset Workshop, facilitated by Marcia (Donziger) Beckner, CEO and founder of Culture CARES® Global, creates breathing room to step back, assess what's draining your energy, and reconnect with the leadership work only you can do. This interactive session will help you reframe burnout through a systems lens, clarify where your time and attention should go, and build a practical 90-day leadership focus to sustain momentum without sacrificing your well-being.
