⛓️‍💥MEXICO JAILBREAK & HEARTBREAK!⛓️‍💥

We were sent a pic of a mama malamute nursing her 8 babies that needed rescue in Mexico. Immediately we said yes, and we were (and still are) adamant about rescuing mama. We never leave our mamas behind. Unfortunately, the owner refused to give us mama, even just temporarily while she took care of her baby dinos and we could vet her.

I know how this story goes. We were gonna lose those babies, too. Maybe it’s just a gut feeling from being in rescue and going through this so many times, but I knew those babies weren’t safe where they were. I begged to let us have the babies now, even before they were done nursing. I knew that leaving them there would have a far worse consequence for them than not being able to socially develop with their mama.

That’s when I learned that 3 babies were already given away at just a couple of weeks old. I was horrified. So I begged again to let me have the remaining 5, knowing I could save them the horrible fate I knew they would have if they stayed there.

In the end, there were only 2 left but we were able to secure them. We’re devastated for the babies that were given away at just a few weeks old (all before 4 weeks old!). I hate when owners do this. I knew they would, too. I knew they were going to give away all of those puppies and that their lives would be hell. I’m always so disappointed and furious when owners do this, knowing a rescue is able to take and vet them all.

But for those two puppies? Their worlds are forever changed. We got them safe to CO and vetted and socialized. My amazing fosters have been loving on them so much! They are amazing little puppies who I know will have incredible lives!

My offer to rescue mama still stands. It’s probably the most upsetting part of this rescue. But I’m still so happy and relieved that we able to ensure two of her baby dinos are gonna live the life they deserve.

Can you help us with their vetting, transport, and supplies cost?

Dog Rescue Is a Public Welfare System — Whether People Want to Admit It or Not.

There is a misconception that dog rescue is simply a group of people who “love dogs” and take in animals because they want to.

That is only a small part of the picture.

Dog rescue is, in many communities, functioning as a public welfare system for animals.

When a dog is abandoned, neglected, surrendered, found wandering, dumped, abused, or simply becomes more than an owner can handle, someone has to step in.

Someone has to answer the phone.

Someone has to provide a safe place.

Someone has to pay for the examination, vaccines, bloodwork, medications, surgery, behavioral support, food, boarding, transportation and everything else that dog needs.

Someone has to determine whether that dog can safely be placed into a home.

And when there is nowhere else for that dog to go, rescue is often the safety net.

The important distinction is that most rescue organizations are not government-funded welfare agencies. They are nonprofits, foster networks and private organizations operating with donations, volunteers and limited resources.

Yet they are performing a function that directly impacts public welfare.

Rescues help reduce stray populations.
They keep animals out of dangerous situations.
They assist overwhelmed shelters.
They take dogs with medical and behavioral needs that many facilities cannot accommodate.
They educate the public about responsible ownership.
They facilitate adoptions.
They provide resources to struggling owners when possible.
And they help prevent animals from becoming another problem for already-overburdened municipal systems.

But there is a major difference between a public welfare responsibility and a publicly funded service.

Rescue workers don’t receive a government paycheck for answering an emergency surrender request at midnight.

Volunteers aren’t issued a budget to pay a $6,000 emergency surgery bill.

Fosters don’t receive a government stipend for opening their homes.

And nonprofit organizations don’t have an endless supply of money simply because the community needs their services.

This is where the disconnect happens.

People often expect rescue to function like an unlimited public resource while simultaneously expecting it to operate entirely on private donations.

They expect us to say yes to every dog.

They expect immediate placement.

They expect expensive medical care.

They expect behavioral rehabilitation.

They expect us to take responsibility when an owner can no longer—or no longer wants to—handle their dog.

And when we finally say “we don’t have the capacity,” people sometimes act as though rescue has failed.

But capacity is real.

Money is real.

Foster homes are real.

Kennel space is real.

Volunteer hours are real.

And when those resources run out, you cannot simply manufacture more.

This is why supporting animal rescue should not be viewed as simply “helping a charity.”

It is supporting a system that provides a safety net for animals and, ultimately, for the communities in which those animals live.

If you want rescue organizations to continue serving as that safety net, they need more than appreciation.

They need responsible pet owners, foster homes, volunteers, donations, community partnerships, education and realistic expectations.

Because rescue cannot be an unlimited public welfare system funded entirely by private people.

At some point, the community has to recognize the role rescue is playing—and decide that the people doing this work shouldn’t have to carry the entire weight of the system alone.
