EPA Region 8 Regional Administrator Cyrus Western joined EPA scientists as sampling began on the Clark Fork, Bitterroot and Blackfoot Rivers to better understand PCB distribution and support clean water for local communities. This science-based project responds to concerns from tribes, state agencies and community groups and helps fill important data gaps across Montana watersheds. Working together for clean water, healthy rivers and strong communities 💧🌿🐟

In July, teams at the East Helena Superfund site kicked off the latest round of residential yard cleanups to address lead contamination. Dozens of yards will be excavated and re-landscaped with clean soil and sod this summer with cleanups continuing over the next five years. Approximately 200 properties have been identified as requiring cleanup under the site’s 400 ppm soil-lead cleanup level. Lead poisoning can cause developmental problems in children and health issues across the lifespan, so removing exposure risks from lead in soil is one way of several ways that EPA helps communities stay healthy and thrive!

Earlier this summer, EPA announced 2 recipients from Region 8 were selected to receive $400,000 each through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. 🎉 EPA is one of 11 federal agencies participating in the SBIR program, which is a competitive, award-based initiative that helps small businesses explore technological solutions with the goal of bringing successful innovations to market. 🔬

Mark your calendar for the next Lowry Landfill Open House!

Officials from Arapahoe County Public Health, the EPA and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment will host the event at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds on Aug. 26 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The goal is to help the public learn about the Lowry Landfill Superfund Site and the actions being taken to ensure cleanup activities remain protective of human health and the environment.

Building environmental careers in Colorado 🌱

Groundwork Denver's GRIT (Green Infrastructure Training) program, operated by Groundwork Denver, is a paid multi month program preparing young adults for jobs in environmental industries. 🛠️🌿Supported by the U.S. EPA through the Brownfields Job Training Grants 🤝 this program bridges EPA's mission with community workforce development.

The FY27 Brownfields Job Training Notice of Funding Opportunity is now open! 💲 Applications are due September 23, 2026! This funding supports eligible entities, including nonprofit organizations, to deliver Brownfields Job Training programs that help recruit, train, and place local residents with the skills needed to secure full-time employment in the environmental field. This includes areas such as remediation, chemical safety and site preparation for the revitalization of brownfields.
