Last week our participants were challenged with mock traffic-stop scenarios. They were asked to consider:

Reason for the stop
Roadside safety aspects
Professional interactions with drivers
Equipment and dispatching

This is just Week 2. Our participants will continue to gain hands-on experience and deeper understanding of the work we do. The journey continues!

There’s more than one kind of relationship being built at the Citizens Police Academy.

Our newest academy kicked off last Thursday, giving community members an opportunity to meet our officers, learn more about the Cherry Hills Village Police Department and better understand the work happening in their community.

But just as importantly, participants are getting to know one another.

A strong community isn’t built only through relationships between residents and their police department. It’s also built when neighbors know neighbors, conversations happen and people feel connected to the community around them.

Those relationships strengthen our sense of community, encourage people to look out for one another and ultimately help make Cherry Hills Village an even safer place to live.

Looking forward to many more conversations, connections and shared experiences with this Citizens Police Academy class.

We'll have an extra officer on duty dedicated to directing traffic, and we need your help too.

The Back-To-School excitement is real.

We care about student safety, and we have some practical tips to use as your little ones head back to the classroom. Here's exactly what you can say...

Crossing The Street: "Look left, look right, then left again. Even if you have a walk signal, make sure drivers see you."

Staying Alert: "Anytime you're near the street your eyes and ears need to be paying attention. Phones down and headphones off until you get there safely."

If Something Feels "Off": "If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts. Go find a teacher, police officer or school staff member to report what you see and ask for help."

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is aware of the sightings and will not respond unless a bear exhibits aggressive behavior.

BEAR SIGHTINGS REPORTED IN CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE

Cherry Hills Village has received several reports of bear sightings around Kent Denver and along Vista Road. Nearby Greenwood Village has also reported sightings near Cherryville Road, Cherry Lane Road, Franklin Road and the Greenwood Pines neighborhood, as well as east of University Boulevard near the High Line Canal.

Although bear sightings are unusual in our area, bears occasionally move through developed areas. Residents can help protect themselves, their pets and wildlife by taking a few simple precautions:

• Never approach a bear. Remain calm, give it plenty of space and make sure it has a clear way to leave. If you need to move away, back away slowly. Never run or climb a tree.
• Avoid surprising bears, particularly around dawn and dusk. Speak in a calm, firm voice to make the bear aware of your presence.
• Check your yard before letting pets outside, supervise them and keep dogs leashed and under control when walking.
• Bring pet food and bird feeders indoors. Clean grills after each use and securely store coolers.
• Pick fruit as it ripens and clean up fallen fruit.
• Keep trash indoors overnight and wait until collection day to place it outside.
• Remove food, trash, coolers and other scented items from vehicles. Keep vehicle and garage doors closed and locked.
• If a bear enters your yard, go inside, keep pets indoors and give it a clear route to leave. If it remains in the area or returns repeatedly, contact Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

These small steps can help protect residents and pets—and reduce the likelihood that bears linger or learn to seek food in our neighborhoods.

Registration is open!
➡ But only a few seats remain for our fall Citizens Police Academy.

Beginning August 27, academy participants will meet with Cherry Hills Village police officers each week and gain a firsthand look at the work, training and decision-making involved in serving our community.

Over the course of the academy, participants will explore traffic stops, criminal investigations, arrest-control techniques, police technology, emergency vehicle operations, fi****ms training, DUI investigations and more. The schedule also includes K9 and SWAT demonstrations, a use-of-force simulator and a four-hour patrol ride-along.

Most classes are held Thursday evenings, with two Saturday morning sessions. Graduation will take place November 5.

This is a great opportunity to ask questions, meet our officers and experience parts of police work that most community members never get to see.
