🚨 PUBLIC SAFETY UPDATE: SMOKE ODOR IN THE AIR 🚨

Residents across the area may notice a smoke odor in the air due to ongoing wildfire activity in the region, including the Ross Fire in Palo Pinto County, which was reported at approximately 50,000 acres at last count. A wildfire off FM 51 in Wise County also remains active, with areas continuing to burn or smolder.

At this time, residents may notice the smell of smoke without seeing smoke or flames nearby.

🔥 If you notice a smoke odor, please take a moment to determine whether you are actually seeing smoke or flames or are only detecting the smell of smoke. If you see smoke or flames, report it and provide your location and as much information as possible. This information can help emergency dispatchers determine the appropriate response and avoid sending valuable emergency resources to unverified fire calls.

We appreciate the community's assistance as local emergency responders continue to monitor wildfire activity and prioritize resources where they are needed most.

Please share this information with your neighbors and help us keep our community informed.

**Important Notice: SCAM ALERT**

We have received reports that individuals are falsely claiming association with the Denton County Sheriff's Office and making fraudulent demands. They use scare tactics, claiming you missed federal jury duty and now have a warrant that can be resolved only by paying a fee, which they request via Bitcoin using a QR code. These scammers often use the names of our current employees when contacting you.

Please remain vigilant. Never share personal information over the phone, and do not send money to anyone claiming to be affiliated with the Sheriff's Office. If you receive suspicious calls or messages, hang up and report them to local authorities immediately.

While on a call in Justin today, Deputy Nordt noticed a small owl in distress and knew it needed help. After contacting our Animal Control Officer, Deputy Alvarez, he reached out to a local wildlife rescue for assistance. Deputy Nordt carefully transported the owl to meet with a wildlife rescue team member, who took it into their care. We’re happy to share that, although the little guy has a broken leg, the wildlife rescue team said he should recover well with proper treatment and care. Sometimes, the job leads you on unexpected adventures, like lending a helping hand to a feathered friend!🦉

Please join us in congratulating Deputies Gerrand Lockhart, Alan Henry, Ian Concepcion-Marquez, Shannon Roach, Tommy Cowan, Joseph Gilbert, and Sergeant Karisa Flowers, recipients of the Lifesaving Award.

When a citizen suddenly collapsed at the Denton County Main Courthouse on March 9, the deputies acted without hesitation, quickly assessing the situation and initiating lifesaving measures. Working together, they immediately began CPR and used an AED until EMS arrived.

Because of their swift and decisive actions, the individual regained a pulse and was transported to the hospital for further care. Their actions are a powerful reminder that our deputies are prepared to answer the call, no matter the emergency. We are incredibly proud of their teamwork, professionalism, and commitment to serving our community.

Congratulations, and thank you for making a difference when it mattered most!
