This year marks the 250th Anniversary of America and the 200th Anniversary of Dennis Township. As part of these anniversary celebration, Dennis Township is inviting locals to capture the people, places, and history that make the community unique through a photo contest titled “250 Years Through Our Lens.” The contest encourages participants of all ages to share images that reflect the township’s heritage, community spirit, and natural beauty. Submissions will be accepted through July 12, 2026. Participants may submit photographs in five categories:
Historic Treasures – Buildings, monuments, cemeteries, landscapes, and historic landmarks in Dennis Township
Community Spirit – Local events, neighbors, volunteers, businesses, and generational families
“Then & Now” Recreations – Modern recreations of historical photos taken at the same location
Hidden Gems – Unique or lesser-known spots around town
Youth Vision – Photos taken by person under the age of 14
Participants may submit up to one digital photograph in each category, and participants are encouraged to include a short cap on or story about each image.
All eligible entries will be displayed during National Night Out on August 4, 2026, at the Dennis Township Recreation Center, where community members will vote for their favorite photographs by ballot.
Winners will be announced during the National Night Out celebration and will receive:
Recognition at the August 18, 2026, Township Committee Meeting
A feature on Dennis Township’s social media channels
Display of winning photographs at Town Hall
A gift card
The Township will also celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary and Dennis Township’s 200th Anniversary with cupcakes for National Night Out attendees.
A note about the grant: “Cape May County’s Land of the Free Celebration 250 grant program provided municipalities the opportunity to apply for matching funds to support patriotic events recognizing America’s 250th Anniversary.
While municipalities could apply for up to $25,000, the program required a dollar-for-dollar cash match from the municipality. That means any award had to be matched with local taxpayer funds.
Dennis Township chose to apply for $1,000 to support a patriotic photo contest and related materials. This project met the grant requirements and, more importantly, was already included in the township’s preliminary budget. That allowed us to participate in the program without increasing local operating costs.
Dennis Township has not historically hosted a July 4th celebration, as neighboring communities and shore towns already provide a variety of patriotic events throughout Cape May County. Our primary township-wide summer event remains National Night Out, which continues to be well attended and supported by residents.
Our approach was simple: participate in the grant opportunity in a way that made sense for Dennis Township while remaining fiscally responsible. We were able to do that while maintaining a 0% municipal tax rate this year, which continues to be a priority for this administration.”
