Please join us Monday at the Courthouse for the American Legion and VFW annual Memorial Day Ceremony. This is an important day for us to remember and honor those we have lost. The names of all the Veterans in Crawford County who have passed away this last year will be read.

Join us next Tuesday, May 12th in Deloit. From 10 am to 2 pm you can come meet with Veteran Service Officers from Crawford, Carroll, Sac and Ida Counties. Joining us will be the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs, VA Health Care and many agencies from the 4 county area that serve Veterans and their families. A free lunch will be served! If you are a family member or caregiver of a Veteran please come so we can help you with any benefits they have earned!

Come join us this Wednesday, April 22 for a benefit and resource clinic in Dow City at the Brasel Building. We will be there from 10 am to 2 pm, and joining us will be Harrison County VSO, Brittany and Shelby County VSO, Carmen, along with several state and local agencies serving Veterans and their families. Lunch will be served! If you are a family member of a Veteran, please come and gain valuable information you may need in assisting your Veteran.

This is an event you will not want to miss! Come see us in Manilla on October 8th for our latest Veteran Resource Fair. The even will include 4 counties, Crawford, Carroll, Shelby and Audubon - but wherever you live you are welcome to attend! This fair will feature many Federal VA employees from various departments including benefits and health care.

Our hearts are broken at the loss of LaWayne Gronau. LaWayne was a dedicated VA Commissioner in Crawford County, and our biggest cheerleader. He was always up for an adventure, loved to represent the County at our events, a person we could always count on. I can't say enough, our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Pam, their family, the Schleswig community and the many National Guard members he served with and mentored over the years.

LaWayne Gronau, age 80, of Schleswig, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at the UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center of Sioux City, Iowa.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the United Church of Christ of Schleswig, Iowa. Kirk Manchester, Lay Leader will officiate. Committal Services will follow in the Morgan Township Cemetery of Schleswig, Iowa, with Military Rites conducted by the Schleswig Post No. 0645 of the American Legion and the VFW Post No. 3930 of Schleswig, Iowa.

A Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at the United Church of Christ of Schleswig, Iowa.

In honor of LaWayne’s life and service, memorials may be directed to his family and will be used to benefit the community he so faithfully served.

We were honored today to have a Diabetic Lunch and Learn with Sarah Gaul at CCMH. We learned so much about healthy eating and making food choices to balance our meals. Remember, Veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange, and are diabetic- that is a presumptive illness and we can file a claim for that!
