From information given to me from past board members, and others affiliated with Shop With A Cop, the event was organized and created in the 1980's. It was created to give local law enforcement agencies the opportunity to meet the children, who were chosen by teachers, and give them an early Christmas present. It began, and still takes place to this day, at our local Kmart. The first event was abl
e to take 20 kids, and let them choose a toy of their liking. It has grown tremendously over the years since the first event, thanks to all who contribute, donate, and help out in various ways. In 1992, Santa was able to join the children as they searched for that perfect toy. He was brought in by helicopter. That was the same year, that law enforcement was able to actually take the kids shopping through the store, and help them with finding that perfect gift. 100 kids were chosen that year. There was also a year, when Lordsburg joined in, and we were able to treat 500 kids at the event. As mentioned earlier, the money used to fund this event was raised through raffles and donations from persons and businesses throughout the community. We try and continue with our fundraising throughout the year, so we have plenty of time to gather the funds needed to feed this event for as many children as possible. Thanks to all in the past, who have donated time and money, to this event. And thanks to all who continue to do so, and to anyone who would like to donate or contribute in any way in future events.
