Alright folks it's that time of the year. We are seeing the ❄️ in the forecast which for us unfortunately means getting prepped for those calls.

Here are a few reminders from us to make sure you are ready for Old Man Winter.

🚗 Have good winter tires! Slow down on slick roads! Four-wheel drive may help you go, but it does not help you stop.

🔥 Keep your chimney cleaned before using your fireplace or wood stove.
Santa should be the only thing coming down
the chimney—not smoke, soot, or sparks!

🔌 Give space heaters space. Keep them at least 3 feet from anything that can burn, plug them directly into a wall outlet, and turn them off when going to sleep.

🔋 Replace and test smoke and carbon monoxide alarm batteries every 6months, replace any detectors that are not working properly.

🏠 Keep your house vents clear of snow.
"Winter hibernation" causes a decrease in airflow (you only Open and Close your garage door) which overtime will create enough buildup to make a CO detector go off.
Remove snow and debris from furnaces, dryers, and other outside vent openings!

Stay warm, drive smart and help us keep winter emergencies to a minimum! We want to see you at Community events not at the end of a Hose-line!

🔥 Training 🔥

Training last night found us with our friends at FT Greely.
Training focused on Fire and smoke behavior. Using a mini house (dollhouse) built by a firefighter most of training was spent discussing

Fire:
- how size and position relates to fire attack, victim search and size ups

Smoke:
- how color, volume, speed and location relates to fire location and interior conditions.

Afterwards firefighters spent some time doing Bunker Drills, timing each other on Donning and Doffing gear in 60seconds.

🧑🏻‍🚒👨🏻‍🚒👩🏻‍🚒Training night

Training last night was pretty active.
After our usual Pre training brief everyone loaded in an apparatus and departed to three different houses for Size Up and Radio Comm practice.

Talking on the radio is extremely hard and we recognize that, just the thought of everyone is listening to YOU and what YOU are saying. Mic fright is a real thing. Everyone got a chance to talk on the radio and work through a good Size Up and 360°.

Once everyone was done talking we ran through a brief vehicle fire scenario with our cut up cars. The crew in 1 Engine was assigned fire attack, the 2nd engine was assigned water supply and Extrication prep.

It was a packed evening and our FitBits showed High Heart rates!

*Structure Fire*

At 1:45 PM RDVFD responded to a tone out for a structure fire down Center Rd. Called in by homeowners who reported their fire alarms were activating and pellet stove had smoke pouring from it. They had all evacuated and were waiting fire.

Five Volunteers responded with 2 Engines on Standby along with the Delta Junction Fire Department and Big Delta Rescue.

Firefighters first on scene found smoke in the interior of the house and after investigation found its origin the pellet stove.
Responders verified there was no heat or fire extension into the house structure then got to work removing hot ash from the stove and cleaning any creosote from the pipes.

After verifying heat was only in the emptied stove, the house was cleared and firefighters marked the scene as safe.

RDVFD cleared at 2:30PM
Temperature was 48.2°F / wind 13mph
