We ended another amazing summer in Bethlehem last weekend, and our seasonal Town staff were a big reason why it was so good.

This year, like most years, the Town brought on almost 150 seasonal employees to welcome pool visitors, maintain fields, keep our pools safe, lead summer camps, and more. Outside of the Parks & Recreation Department, seasonal employees were gathering engineering data, painting fire hydrants, and collecting yard waste.

As we enjoy Bethlehem’s great services, it’s easy to forget all the work that goes into delivering them. And it’s hard to say goodbye when the pool complex closes on Labor Day because most of our seasonal staff have returned to college or school. But let’s all take a moment to appreciate the hard work of our seasonal employees, and the full-time staff who guide their success!

The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 profoundly affected our nation, and hit our Bethlehem community hard as well. Many here lost family, friends, and colleagues, and the absence of these loved ones still aches 25 years later.

But the losses from the attack didn’t stop when the Twin Towers fell. Bethlehem firefighters, always ready in times of need, rushed to Ground Zero to help. Many of these local heroes paid high prices as exposure to toxic dust and chemicals took high tolls on their bodies.

Billy Eck, Jr of the Slingerlands Fire Department did not survive this exposure. Last year, Bethlehem’s fire companies came together at the Firefighters Memorial in Slingerlands to celebrate his life and to honor his memory.

On this 25th anniversary of 9/11, and Bethlehem’s fire departments invite the community to join them at the Firefighters Memorial Park in Slingerlands at 6pm to remember all who were lost on and after that horrific day.

September is National Preparedness Month, and the Town’s Director of Emergency Management, Jack Brennan, is encouraging residents to think about their readiness for emergencies.

What to Put in Your Emergency Supply Kit?

Now is a good time to get your home ready for anything. If you have the right supplies, emergencies will be easier to handle. The Albany County Department of Health suggests packing, food, water, manual can opener, flashlight and extra batteries, first aid kit and more. See the full list at the link below.

Check your supply kit once a year to make sure nothing has expired.

When the Town had to issue an Emergency Order to Vacate the Albany Center for Independent Living facility because of severe building code violations, 45 people lost their homes. This was a heartbreaking consequence to the facility owner’s management of the building, but one that was necessary because the safety of the residents and staff is our top priority.

Throughout this process, Bethlehem’s Senior Services Dept, Police Dept, and Building Division have worked relentlessly to support the residents. And our community has stepped up as well.

Jennifer Casale, our Deputy Director of Senior Services, put out a call to the Delmar Progress Club for suitcases so residents would have the dignity of moving their belongings in them rather than garbage bags. In less than 24 hours, more than 100 suitcases were delivered to Town Hall.

The Town of Bethlehem has issued an Emergency Order to Vacate the Albany Center for Independent Living in Delmar, requiring the facility to close and its residents to be relocated.

The Town is committed to supporting residents and staff during this process and working with state and local partners to ensure their safety and well-being.

The ADA-Accessible Playground in North Bethlehem Park is open! We held a ribbon cutting yesterday to celebrate our Parks & Rec team’s amazing work on this project and Senator Pat Fahy’s generous delivery of $100,000 to help make it possible.

A few years ago, our Parks & Rec Dept partnered with the Friends of Bethlehem Parks & Rec to conduct a comprehensive accessibility assessment of our entire park network. Because we’re Bethlehem, we didn’t just put the resulting report on a shelf, we integrated it into our daily operations and ongoing facility investments.

I am so proud of our team’s true commitment to making our parks welcoming and accessible, and I am so grateful to Senator Pat Fahy for again stepping up to help our community.
