Our port and Louisiana Sea Grant worked with Bayou La Batre to help them plan a development featuring a seafood market, marina and other features. There are many shrimp boats there and could become a direct seafood program like we did in Delcambre. Congratulations to them as a small coastal community.

WORLD OCEANS DAY
World Oceans Day takes place every 8 June. It is an annual observation to honor, help protect, and conserve the world’s oceans. The ocean provides us with many resources and services including oxygen, climate regulation, food sources, medicine, and more

The sea is vital because it::

- Provides food for people
- Makes oxygen
- Impacts weather everywhere
- Purifies water that runs to the ocean, evaporates and falls as rain
- Provides the basis for a large number of medicines

From the U.S. Department of Commerce:

"June is National Ocean Month through a Presidential Proclamation, coinciding with World Ocean Day, celebrated annually on June 8th. While the ocean is well-known for its natural beauty and mysteries, it also provides practical benefits such as producing oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide emissions, influencing global climate and weather patterns, providing sustainable protein sources, and powering our economy by supporting transportation and clean energy development.

A clean ocean is essential to life on Earth. NOAA's National Ocean Service offers suggestions for keeping the sea healthy and pollution-free, such as conserving water, reducing waste and pollutants, and EATING SUSTAINABLE WILD-CAUGHT SEAFOOD. Additionally, throughout June, we celebrate our ocean with the NOAA 30 Days of Ocean campaign spotlighting ocean awareness and literacy."
