PUBLIC NOTICE — Town of Delcambre Sewer System
Attention Residents: Please Do Not Flush Wipes, Rags, or Other Non-Flushable Items
The Town of Delcambre respectfully requests the cooperation of all residents and businesses in protecting our municipal sewer system. In recent months, our public works crews have responded to an increasing number of clogs and pump failures caused by wipes, rags, and other materials that should never be flushed down the toilet.
Please be aware that products marketed as "flushable" wipes are, in fact, not safe for sewer systems. Unlike toilet paper, these products do not dissolve or break down in water. Once flushed, they travel through the sewer lines, where they accumulate, bind together with grease and other debris, and form blockages. They also become entangled in the impellers of our sewer lift station pumps, causing the pumps to jam, overheat, and in some cases fail entirely.
The consequences of these blockages affect our entire community. They include sewage backups into homes, businesses, and yards; overflows that pose risks to public health and the environment; emergency repair calls that place our maintenance crews at risk; and significant repair and replacement costs. Sewer pumps are expensive pieces of equipment, and every dollar spent repairing preventable damage is a dollar that cannot be invested elsewhere in our town's infrastructure and services.
We ask that residents dispose of the following items in the trash — never the toilet: baby wipes, disinfecting and cleaning wipes, so-called "flushable" wipes, rags and towels, paper towels and napkins, feminine hygiene products, cotton swabs, dental floss, and diapers. As a general rule, only human waste and toilet paper should ever be flushed.
