Training Spotlight: Command Presence Starts Early

This weekend, members of the Tri-Township Firefighters Association trained with Command Channel, focusing on one of the most critical moments of any incident; the first five minutes.

As the in-charge firefighter of an engine company, those initial decisions set the tone for everything that follows. From establishing a strong size-up to identifying immediate hazards, assigning priorities, and communicating a clear plan, getting it right early makes a difference.

Crews worked through realistic scenarios emphasizing:
• Building an effective initial size-up
• Rapid risk vs. gain decision making
• Clear, concise radio reports
• Establishing command presence from the front seat

Whether it’s a working fire, MVC, or medical emergency, those first few minutes matter. Training like this ensures our firefighters are prepared to make confident, informed decisions when it counts.

Thank you to Command 352 and staff for the time, knowledge, and leadership.

Train like you fight.

⚠️ Severe Weather Alert – Tonight ⚠️

Tri-Township Fire District is monitoring a developing weather system expected to impact our area this evening into early Friday morning.

The National Weather Service is forecasting the potential for severe thunderstorms, with hazards that may include:
• Damaging winds
• Large hail
• Heavy rainfall and localized flooding
• Isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out, especially near and north of I-70

Storms are expected to move through the area between 7:00 PM and 4:00 AM, traveling from northwest to southeast.

We strongly encourage residents to prepare now:
• Ensure you have multiple ways to receive weather alerts overnight
• Secure outdoor items that could become hazards in high winds
• Review your shelter plan, especially in the event of a tornado warning
• Use caution if traveling during periods of heavy rain or reduced visibility
Our crews will be staffed and ready to respond, but your preparation is critical to staying safe.

We will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.
Stay weather aware. Stay safe.

☘️ Happy St. Patrick’s Day from TTFA ☘️

St. Patrick’s Day isn’t just about wearing green . It’s a nod to a group of people who helped shape the fire service into what it is today.

In the 1800s, Irish immigrants filled the ranks of fire departments across the country. It wasn’t glamorous work, but it was honest work. They built the culture we still carry; pride in the job, loyalty to your crew, and showing up when things are at their worst. A lot of what we take pride in today, the brotherhood, the grit, the identity of the fire service — has Irish roots whether we realize it or not.

Enjoy the day. Celebrate responsibly. Look out for each other.

We’ll be here if you need us.

🚒 Training at Tri-Township Fire District

When the rain finally gave us a break and temperatures warmed up, our crews took advantage of the opportunity to get outside and put in some training time.

Members worked on hose handling and nozzle control, focusing on the fundamentals that make a difference on the fireground.

We also want to thank a local church for allowing us to use their open parking lot to conduct this training. Community partnerships like this help us stay prepared to serve when it matters most.

It is with heavy hearts that the Tri-Township Fire District shares the passing of one of our own, Merlin “Boots” Sheets, who passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026 at the age of 91.

Boots joined Tri-Township Fire Department in 1961 and dedicated an incredible 50 years of service to this community, much of that time serving as Captain. His leadership, work ethic, and steady presence helped shape this department during its formative years. Boots was an integral part of building the foundation that Tri-Township Fire stands on today, and for that, we will always be grateful.

A lifelong Delaware County farmer and public servant, Boots’ commitment to service extended far beyond the firehouse. He served as Brown Township Trustee, Delaware County Commissioner, and was instrumental in helping develop and implement the county’s 911 system. He also devoted many years to the Delaware County Fair Board, Delaware County Transit Board, and numerous other committees and organizations.

But above all, Boots treasured his family and community. He leaves behind his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Marlene, along with children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, and many friends who will carry forward his stories and legacy.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Sheets family during this time. Boots’ impact on this department and this community will not be forgotten. His service, leadership, and dedication set a standard we continue to strive for today.

Rest easy, Captain Sheets. Your watch is complete — we’ll take it from here.

Calling hours will be Thursday, February 19, 2026 from 4 - 7 pm. At the same location on Friday, February 20, 2026, friends may call from 1:00 - 2:00 pm where a service celebrating Boot’s life will follow at 2:00 pm. Following the service there will be short time of fellowship before burial at Green Mound Cemetery in Kilbourne at 4:00 pm.

The Tri-Township Firefighters Association grieves the passing of retired Firefighter Dan Huffman, a longtime volunteer with the Liberty Township / Powell Fire Department , Scioto Township/Ostrander Fire Department , and Radnor Township Fire Department who passed away after a long battle with cancer.

Dan’s life was defined by service to others. For 50 years, he proudly served his community and surrounding communities with unwavering dedication to the fire service. Over the course of his distinguished career, he answered countless calls for help, mentored generations of firefighters, and embodied what it means to serve with integrity, courage, and compassion.

Beyond the uniform, Dan was a trusted colleague, mentor, and friend to many. His commitment to the fire service and the relationships he built along the way have left a lasting impact that will be felt for years to come. His presence within the department and the broader fire service community will be deeply missed.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dan’s family, friends, and our brothers and sisters at Liberty, Scioto, and Radnor Township Fire Departments during this difficult time. Please keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.

Dan Huffman’s legacy of service and sacrifice will forever remain a part of the fire service and the communities he so faithfully served.

🚨 Winter Storm Expected This Weekend 🚨

The National Weather Service is forecasting a winter storm that will impact our area from late Saturday through Sunday, with the potential for 8–12 inches of snow across much of central Ohio. Snowfall rates could be heavy at times, especially Sunday morning through the afternoon, which may lead to hazardous travel conditions.

What to expect:
• Light snow may begin Saturday afternoon/evening
• Heavier snow likely Sunday, with reduced visibility and slick roads
• A mix of sleet or freezing rain is possible in some areas
• Conditions may change rapidly as the storm develops

Safety Tips:
• Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy snowfall
• Slow down and increase following distance if you must drive
• Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle (blanket, flashlight, charger, water)
• Clear snow from vents if using alternative heat sources
• Check on elderly neighbors or anyone who may need assistance
• Stay clear of downed power lines and report outages

Our crews will be ready to respond, but conditions like this can stretch resources. The best way to help is by planning ahead and staying safe.

Please continue to monitor official weather updates and local alerts as the forecast evolves. Stay warm, stay prepared, and stay safe. ❄️🚒

A winter storm will impact the area this weekend, particularly late Saturday through Sunday. Although light snow will begin for parts of the area Saturday afternoon and persist through Saturday night, the heaviest snowfall is expected during the daytime Sunday.
