Delaware County Records Center The archives for Delaware County government. The Records Center is open for the public to view and research their local roots.

It is the mission of the Delaware County Records Center to effectively preserve, maintain, retrieve and store government records in an archival environment while supporting a records management program. This program will ensure the proper preservation of the county records under the laws of Ohio, within a conservative budget framework for the taxpayers.

Fun Fact Friday: Did you know that Delaware had a pumpkin show in addition to the Circleville Pumpkin Show?

From 1910-1922, the city of Delaware was full of autumn festivities including the showings of draft horses, hogs, sheep, fruits and vegetables, baked goods, handmade crafts and plants.

In the initial year of the Delaware Pumpkin Show, event planners only had prepared 1,000 entry tickets. Instead, they received over 2,500 entries.

Fun Fact Friday. Did you know that the legendary Johnny Appleseed, born John Chapman, made quite the mark in Kingston Township?

As he roamed the landscapes of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, he sowed the seeds of the future — quite literally! One of the fascinating pieces of history includes an old orchard on the south side of Granville Street along Prairie Run Creek.

It's believed that some of the trees in this charming orchard might be direct descendants of the very apple trees he planted during his travels. How cool is that? Johnny Appleseed had a special fondness for central Ohio. He spent time in places like Mansfield and Mount Vernon, where he owned land and operated nurseries.

His legacy truly blossomed in these areas, connecting communities to the humble apple tree and its sweet harvest. In a delightful twist of fate, a stunning chainsaw carving of Johnny Appleseed was created as part of Sunbury’s bicentennial celebration in 2016. This tribute not only honors the man behind the myth but also keeps the spirit of his adventurous legacy alive in our hearts. The Johnny Appleseed statue is in Sunbury village square. Looking back to the 1970s and 1980s, it's clear how popular chess clubs became in middle and high schools across Delaware County. Happy Jug Day! On this day 45 years ago….1981 Little Brown Jug 🏇

Fan Hanover won the 1981 Little Brown Jug, driven by Glen Garnsey, from New York.

She made history as the first and only filly to ever win the prestigious pacing classic, overcoming an accident-marred final heat at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Delaware, Ohio.

The following day a news release was published in the most humorous way to summarize the race: "It was supposed to be the running of the 36th annual Little Brown Jug, one of the jewels of the 3-year-old pacing's Triple Crown. It turned out to be a combination demolition derby and a boxing match, and it was won by a lady --- Fan Hanover, the first filly ever to win the prestigious race."
