Our new tick station signs were installed this week at Blues Creek Park and Gallant Woods Park as part of our partnership with Preservation Parks of Delaware County to strengthen tick surveillance and prevention efforts.

Visitors are encouraged to do a quick “tick check” after spending time on the trails. If a tick is found, simply place it in the jar attached to the sign. Our staff will collect and monitor the ticks to better track local tick populations and help reduce the risk of ticks hitching a ride home with park visitors.

Our vector staff are preparing to set mosquito traps throughout the county to monitor mosquito activity and identify species that may pose a public health risk. If you see one of these traps in your community, please do not disturb it.

Mosquitoes are collected weekly from May–October for testing. If a trap tests positive or a human case of mosquito-borne illness is reported, licensed staff may spray within a one-mile radius, with public notice provided in advance.

Another wet spring has created ideal growing conditions for poison hemlock across Ohio, including Delaware County. 📸 The background photo was taken this weekend by a community clean-up crew along SR 315.

🚫 Poison hemlock is a highly toxic, invasive plant that poses serious risks to both people and animals. It is often identified by its tall growth, fern-like leaves, and smooth green stems with purple spotting.

⚠️ Do not touch, mow, or burn this plant. Skin contact can cause irritation, and inhaling smoke from burning it can be extremely dangerous.

🌱 It is commonly mistaken for wild carrot (Queen Anne’s lace), so careful identification is important before any removal. If found on your property, use caution and follow safe disposal practices or contact a trained professional.
