Congratulations to Dr. Carmen Balgobin, Superintendent Volusia County Schools recipient of the 2026 Superintendent of the Year Award from the Florida Association for Career and Technical Education (FACTE).

This statewide recognition honors leaders who expand opportunities for students and strengthen connections between education and workforce needs.

Under Dr. Balgobin's leadership, Volusia County Schools has increased Career & Technical Education programs, academies, and pathways by 70% - growing from 164 to 279 opportunities for students in just three years. During that same period, industry certification attainment has increased by 54%, helping more students graduate with valuable workforce credentials and pathways to high-skill, high-wage careers.

This achievement reflects the power of strong partnerships. Together, education and industry are creating opportunities, growing talent, and strengthening Volusia County's workforce.

Volusia County Schools does a great job providing useful professional learning opportunities to our administrators and teachers. Last week it was Administrative Institute. This week it’s Volusia Learns for the teachers and clerical staff. I’m especially proud of our ITS Educational Technology Department for the excellent slate of courses they offered this week.

The ITS Division had a great school year! We celebrated last Thursday evening at Dave & Busters. Each of the four ITS Departments achieved many important objectives!
Infrastructure: network and telecommunications upgrades, school rewiring projects, and improved cyber security defenses.
Client Services: more efficient repairs and student/staff device readiness, device insurance and hardware lifecycle planning, and better device tracking and recovery.
Educational Technology: technology showcase classrooms, impactful ed-tech training such as the AI Academy, and distance instruction.
Software & Systems: Focus ERP implementation, CTE innovations like VR and esports, AI agent development, and the Florida Code grant.

Qualifications are important, but institutional knowledge is priceless. These five ITS ladies have given a combined century of service to Volusia County Schools. Congratulations to Sabra Farajallah, Karen Donohue, Sophia Torres-Pearsall, Tricia Aylward, and Christa Chapple for each receiving their 20 years of service recognition pin.

When I was a teacher, it was a hard job. It has only gotten harder over the years. This week, the Volusia County Schools Cabinet is delivering gifts to teachers in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week. This is Ms. Filkins at Campbell Middle School. We appreciate her and all of our hard-working teachers!

Just finished a tech walk at Sunrise Elementary School. ITS just facilitated a full school installation of interactive flat panels for them. They have a great technician in John Connor. Here we are, walking the catwalk, inspecting the classroom network wiring.
