In case you missed it! FDOT crews recently helped install a statue of Abraham Lincoln in The Villages, which is one of the stops on the America250 Road Trip. 🎩 This statue is among several unveiled by Gov. DeSantis throughout the state to celebrate America's 250th birthday this year.

The Villages, which spans Lake, Sumter, and Marion counties in FDOT's District Five, is one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the nation thanks to its bustling master-planned retirement community with charming town squares, nightly live music, and golf cart-friendly streets.

FDOT wildlife crossings provide plenty of space for animals of all sizes to cross under roads and bridges, but they're used by even the smallest of Florida's creatures too. 🐁

The S.R. 520 crossing at Taylor Creek near the St. John's River in east Orange County, shown here, is 60 feet long and around 110 feet wide, allowing animals to safely cross under four lanes of roadway and prevent vehicle-wildlife collisions.

Fun fact: This curious mouse is using a miniature pathway within the crossing that allows it to pass through both the road and the open terrain safely.

This week is Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, and we're spreading the word about the dangers of driving while fatigued or drowsy.

Driving while tired can slow your reaction time, affect your judgment, impair your sense and abilities, and lead to nodding off or completely falling asleep.

Follow these tips to prevent drowsy driving:
• Get enough sleep before you drive.
• Don't drive after taking medications that cause drowsiness.
• On long trips take a break every 100 miles or two hours, and change drivers when needed.
• You can drink caffeine to increase alertness, but it's not effective to maintain alertness to drive safely in the long run.
• Avoid driving at times when you would normally be asleep. If you are having trouble focusing, frequently blinking, or have heavy eyelids, pull over in a safe place to rest.

Riding an e-bike means sharing space with drivers, pedestrians, and other cyclists. Be a good neighbor on the road.

🚶 Slow down and yield to people on foot. On sidewalks, you’re the guest.
🔔 Ring a bell or say “On your left” when passing.
📱 Put your phone away. One earbud is legal, but two is not.
⚠️ Wheelies and stunts can result in arrest, bike confiscation, and may lead to e-bikes getting banned or age-restricted for everyone.

A parked car can become dangerously hot in just minutes, even on a mild day. Children are especially vulnerable to heat because their bodies warm faster than adults. ☀️

👟Place something you need in the backseat – like a phone, wallet, or even shoes.
🔑 Keep keys out of reach of children.
🚫Never leave a child alone in a car, even for a short time.
📞If you see a child alone in a hot vehicle, call 911.

Governor DeSantis and FDOT Secretary Perdue recently joined local leaders in Daytona Beach, Volusia County, to announce the accelerated start of a transportation project at Clyde Morris Boulevard (S.R. 483) that will improve safety and traffic operations for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, surrounding businesses, and the community.

The project will enhance a 3-mile corridor along Clyde Morris Boulevard with a new pedestrian tunnel under the road, new raised medians, wider sidewalks, a 14-foot-wide shared use path, traffic signal reconstruction, and a new pedestrian crossing at Buccaneer Way.

The announcement also highlighted the partnership between the State of Florida and ERAU that supports Advanced Air Mobility, which has the potential to provide new transportation options for passenger air taxis, cargo delivery, medical transportation, and emergency response.

Thanks to right of way donations from ERAU, Volusia County, and the City of Daytona Beach, the project has been advanced by two years with completion expected in 2029.

FDOT's S.R. A1A buried seawall project in Volusia and Flagler counties is officially complete!

The road's proximity to the beach makes it vulnerable to erosion and hurricane damage, so this innovative effort strengthens the road while preserving the area's natural beauty.

Native plants help stabilize the new dune over the seawalls while maintaining beach access for residents and visitors.

Together with our partners, we're working to preserve our coastline and protect our communities!
