The Legislature reconvened in Tallahassee this week for a Special Session focused on homestead property taxes. While it is clear that hardworking Floridians need relief, I had significant concerns with the original language of the proposal because of its potential impact on public schools. At a time when we are working to strengthen our local school systems and improve teacher pay, a measure that would reduce funding for our already constrained school districts would have too many long-term detrimental effects.
I am thankful that Speaker-Designate Garrison and Senator Jay Trumbull shared these concerns and introduced amendments to protect local funding for public education. Their leadership helped ensure that this important conversation can continue without jeopardizing the resources our students, teachers, and schools rely on.
While I still have questions about how this measure could affect counties and municipalities, I believe Floridians deserve the opportunity to weigh in on an issue of this importance at the ballot box. I look forward to continuing the discussion as we reconvene tomorrow morning.
