The Legislature reconvened in Tallahassee this week for a Special Session focused on homestead property taxes. While it is clear that hardworking Floridians need relief, I had significant concerns with the original language of the proposal because of its potential impact on public schools. At a time when we are working to strengthen our local school systems and improve teacher pay, a measure that would reduce funding for our already constrained school districts would have too many long-term detrimental effects.

I am thankful that Speaker-Designate Garrison and Senator Jay Trumbull shared these concerns and introduced amendments to protect local funding for public education. Their leadership helped ensure that this important conversation can continue without jeopardizing the resources our students, teachers, and schools rely on.

While I still have questions about how this measure could affect counties and municipalities, I believe Floridians deserve the opportunity to weigh in on an issue of this importance at the ballot box. I look forward to continuing the discussion as we reconvene tomorrow morning.

Today, the Florida House and Senate passed the state budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year. The budget is now on its way to Governor DeSantis’s desk for his signature.

Although the budget is a compromise among 160 diverse legislators from every corner of the state, I’m glad it includes meaningful investments in Northwest Florida and House District 5. The budget also continues to support priorities that matter to Floridians, including public safety, education, transportation infrastructure, environmental conservation, and tax relief.

While the budget has passed, our work is not yet done. The Legislature will reconvene next week to consider a proposed constitutional amendment regarding property tax relief.

I’m proud to work for you, District 5!

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their sacrifice protects the freedoms we cherish, and their courage reminds us that liberty is never free.

May we honor their memory today and every day. Freedom came at a cost, and we must never forget those who gave everything for America.

Win! Win! Win!

Today we got to celebrate bringing a solution to reality, and it is a win for the public, for Walton County, and for State Parks.

In January, while meeting with the Walton County Tourism Council team, I was able to share a solution I had developed to help with public beach access, and today that solution is in action. We are utilizing the county tram services and other resources to now fully utilize the beaches at Grayton Beach State Park and Topsail Hill Preserve State Park to their unit management plan capacities.

What we are not doing:
1). Paving over parts of our parks to add parking spots.
2). Bringing more people than the unit management plans allow in capacity.
3). Going against recommendations of the conservationists and biologists who developed the capacity limits.

What we are doing:
1). Allowing cyclists and pedestrians to enter and enjoy the park after the parking lot is full.
2). Utilizing the county tram system to bring people to the park until capacity is reached.
3). Utilizing the State Parks in the manner the State intended by bringing people into the park, not keeping them out of the park.

I want to say thank you to the Walton County Tourism Council team, the county employees and leadership involved, Secretary of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Alexis Lambert, Director of State Parks Chuck Hatcher, Chairman Drake, Senator Jay Trumbull, and the employees and volunteers of the State Parks.

Today is why I am a public servant. A public servant does not post problems, but quietly develops solutions and works to make those solutions a reality.

This morning, Senator Jay Trumbull and I joined the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce for a legislative update and discussion on issues impacting our communities. We appreciated the thoughtful questions and conversations on topics ranging from support for small municipalities, to tax reform, and other priorities facing our region.

While the state budget process is still ongoing, we remain committed to supporting the priorities and needs of Northwest Florida communities.

Thank you to the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce for the invitation and for all they do to support local businesses and strengthen our communities. Thank you as well to Evangel Church for hosting the event and for the delicious meal!

Happy Mother’s Day! Today we celebrate moms for all the love and nurturing they provide, the recognized and unseen sacrifices, the leadership inside and outside of the house, and your impact on your children’s lives that is not celebrated enough. My children and I won the lottery when it comes to Moms. Happy Mother’s Day!

What an honor to receive an “A” grade from the Florida Chamber of Commerce in their annual Legislative Report Card. Business growth is absolutely vital to continuing to drive our economy here in the Panhandle. Although there is still much work to be done, I am committed to continuing to promote our area as an attractive environment for future business and economic development.
