"Class L" refers to a newly introduced, non-standardized classification (ISO 3941:2026) for fires involving lithium-ion batteries without metallic lithium, such as in EVs or electronics. Marketed extinguishers are often unlisted by UL and lack approved NFPA 10 standards, making their efficacy questionable.

Key Aspects of "Class L" (Lithium-Ion Battery) Fires:
• Context: These fires are considered electrochemical, requiring specialized handling due to their intensity and tendency to re-ignite.
• Safety Warning: Many "Class L" extinguishers are not third-party tested or approved, leading fire departments to warn against their use.
• Proper Response: Immediate evacuation and calling emergency services (911) is strongly recommended over attempting to extinguish, as these fires can be highly hazardous.
• Comparison: Unlike Class D (metal fires) which involve materials like sodium or magnesium, Class L specifically targets the battery's energy storage mechanism.

Current Status & Adoption
• International: The category has been introduced into the updated ISO 3941:2026 standards to address electrochemical fires involving lithium-ion cells where no lithium metal is present.
• United States: "Class L" is not yet officially recognized by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) or Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Fire marshals in states like Delaware have issued warnings against using unlisted extinguishers marketed as "Class L," as they do not meet current 2021/2022 fire codes.
• Other Regions: In places like India, some manufacturers are already marketing "Class L" agents designed for electric vehicle (EV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) risks.
For confirmed, safe, and recognized fire suppression methods, it is best to rely on standard extinguishing agents approved for the specific hazard.
