On March 10th at 23:24, the Deer Park Fire Department was activated for a reported BBQ fire with an explosion.
Upon arrival, units determined that the homeowner had extinguished the fire; however, a continuous propane tank leak remained, creating a serious and potentially dangerous condition. Propane is highly flammable and can accumulate quickly, posing a significant risk of ignition or explosion.
Under the direction of Chief Robert Macaluso, crews worked to secure the area, eliminate ignition sources, and safely control the leaking tank. Due to the severity of the situation, the Town of Babylon Hazmat Team was requested to assist.
Units operating on scene included 1-4-30, 1-4-32, 1-4-5, 1-4-11, 1-4-10, 1-4-15, and 1-4-8.
The operation required careful monitoring and control of the propane leak to ensure the safety of both residents and responders.
Time of alarm was 23:24, and units were released at 1:56.
⚠️ Safety Reminder: As the weather gets nicer and more residents begin using BBQs and outdoor equipment, please take a moment to check your propane tanks, connections, and hoses for leaks or damage. If you ever smell gas, leave the area immediately and call 911, do not attempt to handle it yourself.
Your Deer Park Fire Department remains committed to protecting our community, day and night. 🫶
