As we get ready to enter the summer months, pool and water safety remain incredibly important for families across our community.

Yesterday, I visited May Moore Primary School in Deer Park and Oakwood Primary Center in South Huntington to present certificates to students who participated in the “Be Pool Smart” Poster Contest. Established by Resolution 927-2007, the contest encourages students to create posters highlighting important pool safety tips and the importance of responsible behavior around water.

Thank you to the principals and assistant principals at both schools for welcoming me, and congratulations to all of the students who participated and helped share this important safety message!

The 60th Annual Puerto Rican/Hispanic Day Parade yesterday was a wonderful celebration of Puerto Rican and Latino culture, resilience, leadership and community impact on Long Island.

I was glad to march alongside Teatro Yerbabruja, local leaders and community members as we honored the pioneers who helped shape our communities while uplifting the voices and contributions of future generations. It was a great day filled with heritage, pride and unity!

Both Arianna and Giovanna embody the spirit of this award through their service, leadership and commitment to others. Congratulations to them both on this well-deserved recognition!

Projects like this are a wonderful example of young people giving back, helping beautify our parks and leaving something meaningful for future generations to enjoy. Last night, I attended the Suffolk County Police Department’s 3rd Precinct Community Meeting to hear directly from local law enforcement and residents about public safety issues impacting our neighborhoods. At the same time, my Chief of Staff, Karen Klafter, attended the 2nd Precinct Community Meeting on my behalf, allowing our office to stay connected with precincts that serve the 17th Legislative District.

Thank you to the officers, community members and civic leaders who continue working together to keep our communities safe and informed!

I was proud to recognize Deer Park resident Cheryl Otero of Catholic Health as the 2026 Healthcare Hero for the 17th Legislative District.

With 14 years of dedicated service at Catholic Health, Cheryl exemplifies compassion, leadership and a deep commitment to healthcare excellence. As Director of the Physician Onboarding team, she helps ensure new physicians and practices have the training, access and support needed to provide exceptional patient care from day one.

Her service also extends beyond her professional role. Cheryl volunteers her time crocheting chemo caps for cancer patients at Good Samaritan University Hospital and infant caps for newborns at St. Charles Hospital.

She was honored alongside the other district honorees at the Suffolk County Legislature’s General Meeting. Congratulations, Cheryl, and thank you for your dedication, kindness and service to others.

Earlier today, I donated blood at the New York Blood Center in Melville amid an ongoing blood emergency. Blood donations are always important, but during a shortage they are truly lifesaving. I am also proud that my Chief of Staff, Karen Klafter, gave blood earlier this week as well.

If you are able, please consider making an appointment to donate. A few minutes of your time can make a meaningful difference for patients and families in need.
