Official Statement from the Deer Lodge Police Department

We are aware of a recent article published by the Silver State Post regarding an investigation into an allegation of child abuse involving a staff member at Powell County High School. We would like to provide our community with accurate context regarding this report.

The Source of the Report: Child Protective Services (CPS) received a report concerning a school staff member. We want to clarify that this allegation did not come from a victim, a parent, or a direct witness. Instead, it was reported by a third- or fourth-party individual who is completely removed from the alleged incident.

Current Status: Standard protocol requires CPS to cross-reference all reports with local law enforcement. Because the alleged incident falls within our jurisdiction, the Deer Lodge Police Department is currently looking into the matter.

We also want to clear up some recent published confusion regarding the roles of local law enforcement agencies:

The Deer Lodge Police Department has not taken over child abuse cases from the Powell County Sheriff’s Office.

Deer Lodge PD investigates cases that occur strictly within the city limits of Deer Lodge.

The Powell County Sheriff’s Office handles cases that occur outside the city limits but within Powell County. While the Sheriff's Office holds county-wide jurisdiction (meaning they can investigate cases anywhere in the county, including inside city limits), our agencies generally divide cases based on those city lines.

Our department remains fully committed to the safety of our community's youth and ensuring all reports are thoroughly evaluated. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

We are proud to announce that our department has received 10 Buddy Kits from the Buddy Christianson Foundation.

These life saving kits will ensure that every one of our sworn and reserve officers is equipped with critical medical gear while on patrol. We are incredibly grateful to the Buddy Christian Foundation for their generosity and continued support of first responders. Their commitment makes a real difference and helps us stay prepared when every second counts.

On the night of March 23, 2026, unknown individual(s) vandalized two vehicles by covering them with mustard and slices of ham. The following night, March 24, 2026, the suspect(s) returned and poured Penetrating Epoxy Sealer onto the same two vehicles, causing significant damage. The estimated damage to both vehicles is expected to exceed $1,500.

During the investigation, the cap to the sealer was located at the original scene. The can of sealer was later found on West St. Mary’s Street, where it had been left on top of another person’s vehicle.

Information obtained by DLPD indicates the incident occurred at approximately 10:00 PM on March 24, 2026.
We are asking residents in the Oregon Street and Arizona Street areas to please check any security or doorbell camera footage from that evening around the listed time. Police are looking for one or more individuals likely traveling on foot in the area.

If you have video footage or information that may assist in this investigation, please contact the Deer Lodge Police Department.

Thank you for your continued support and assistance in keeping our community safe.
