Welcome back to school!

Over the last few months, Medway Schools, Fire, and Police have worked together in response to safety concerns about Micromobility devices raised by residents, school staff, and the Select Board. In a plan Chief Kingsbury outlined to the Select Board in July, the schools, police and fire have been messaging about the safety and legality of these devices.

Yesterday, we saw that the messaging greatly reduced the number of devices operated by underage users on the first day of school. Our officers spoke with some students who rode devices they are not old enough to ride to school yesterday in the hopes that they can discuss the laws with their parents and make informed decisions.

We have been asked for clarity, as the laws surrounding these devices are complex, confusing, and certainly not well known or shared by many retailers who sell them.

People of all ages can ride pedal bikes on public ways and sidewalks, including to school. Persons of all ages can ride Class 1 & 2 E-bikes on the public way and to school. Persons 16 and older with a valid learner's permit or license can ride motorized scooters on the public way and to school, as some high school students legally do. E-motor bikes are for off-road use.

We plan to discuss these issues with our younger residents and with parents at parents' night at the Middle School. We will also answer any questions parents or students may have. We do not wish to take enforcement action, as our goals right now are to ensure riders are legally operating their devices and doing so safely.

The Dedham Police Department is actively organizing the "No Quig Deal Four on the 4th", a new 4‑mile road race scheduled for July 4, 2027, in honor of Sgt. James “Quigs” Quigley.

At the August 20 Select Board meeting, Detective Deborah L. Gonski and Officer Meghan Jenkins shared early event plans, including a race route that begins and ends at Fairbanks Park and a partnership with Marathon Sports who has offered race support, including logistics, timing, online registration, start/finish setup, and bib pick‑up.

All proceeds from the event will support Sgt. Quigley’s family. A post‑race celebration is planned at the field with food and beverage trucks and raffles to give participants a space to remember and celebrate “Quigs.”

Sgt. Quigley’s wife, Kate, shared personal reflections on his journey. His friends called him “Jimi America” for the pride he carried in his community and country.

After being diagnosed with malignant pheochromocytoma in Fall 2011, running became part of how he healed, strengthened himself, and kept moving forward.

He completed races across the region, including a half marathon and the Run to Remember, where he finished hand‑in‑hand with his young daughter, Maeve.

Throughout his illness, he continued walking and jogging whenever treatments allowed, always working to get back out on the road.

There is a recurring problem related to unlocked vehicles. Since July 1, there have been 30 reports of vehicles being entered in Dedham. Neighborhoods across Town have been impacted as well as other communities. The most common factor related to these crimes is an unlocked vehicle. These crimes typically take place during the overnight hours when those intent on committing these crimes can roam neighborhoods under the cover of darkness while residents are sleeping. We need your help to reduce this problem. Every time you leave your vehicle, make sure the vehicle is locked and do not leave any valuables inside your vehicle. If you should see or hear anything unusual during the nighttime, be a good witness, call 911 with as much detailed information as possible.

After a brief postponement due to rain, the annual bike rodeo was held on Wednesday, August 5th at the Endicott Estate. Participants had their helmets checked for proper fit or replaced by Tina Hein of Massachusetts Safe Routes to School. Attendees learned safe riding and stopping techniques before navigating several obstacle courses. The Chuck Wagon served hot dogs, fruit punch, and Hood ice cream sandwiches (courtesy of Hood) for lunch. Raffle prizes were awarded, including gift cards from Ron's Ice Cream, the Bubbling Brook Ice Cream, Launch Family Entertainment Park, the Escape Game, and a bike donated by The Dedham Patrolmen’s Association. The Dedham Fire Department closed out the event with a refreshing cooldown from Engine 3. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the bike rodeo a success.

National Night Out Weather and Event Update:

Due to the weather forecast for Monday, the Ice Cream Social planned for the Oakdale Common will be postponed until Tuesday, August 4, 2026. The event will move to the Endicott Estate and partner with the Dedham Coalition for Equity and Inclusion’s Lawn Games. Please join us for a fun evening of ice cream, lawn games and more from 6 PM – 8 PM at the Endicott Estate.

Stop by to tour the building, explore public safety vehicles and meet Community Resource Dog Ruby!
