Thinking about hitting the water for the holiday weekend? š¤
Whether youāre fishing, boating, or just soaking up the sun, letās make sure everyone makes it back to shore safely!
Itās National Safe Boating Week, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources wants to remind you that a great day on the water starts with preparation. Did you know that in 76% of fatal boating accidents, drowning was the cause, and 87% of those who drowned weren't wearing a life jacket?
Before you launch, check off these quick safety essentials:
𦺠Wear your life jacket: Accidents happen faster than you can grab a stowed vest. Put it on before you push off!
š Check your certificate: In Michigan, you need a boater safety certificate if you were born after: June 30, 1996 (for motorized boats) and Dec. 31, 1978 (for personal watercraft like Jet Skis)
šŗļø File a float plan: Let someone on land know where youāre going, who is with you, and when you expect to be back.
š ļø Inspect your gear: Make sure your boat is in good working order and your communication devices (like marine radios) actually work. Remember, you might not have good cell service on the water.
āļø Watch the weather: Check the forecast and water temperatures before you go, and keep an eye on changing skies.
š Boat sober: Alcohol is a leading factor in fatal boating accidents. Designate a sober skipper!
šØ Watch for Carbon Monoxide: Gas engines and generators produce this odorless killer. Stay at least 20 feet away from any boat running an engine, and make sure your onboard CO detector works.
Letās keep Michigan's waters fun and safe for everyone this weekend! Where are some of your favorite places to go boating or just enjoy the water?
