The morning commute can be tough, but it can be even tougher when you're a turtle. Turtles have places to go this time of year, and they could use our help to get there safely. Here’s how:

Only help a turtle cross the road if it’s safe for you, the turtle, and other drivers. Don’t try to stop fast-moving traffic on a busy road.

Pick up the turtle securely by its shell, and watch out for the claws, the biting end, and the yucky end. Turtles will scratch, bite and relieve themselves when they feel threatened.

Move the turtle in the direction they were traveling and point them away from the road.

Wear gloves if you have some on hand and/or be sure to wash your hands after touching a turtle.

Never pick up a turtle by its tail! You can cause permanent injuries. If you can’t pick up a turtle safely, you can use a stick, shovel or broom to nudge it in the direction it needs to go.

You might be wondering, why does the turtle cross the road? To find a mate, a suitable nesting site, new food sources, and other turtle activities. Thanks for helping Michigan’s turtles get where they need to go!

Thinking about hitting the water for the holiday weekend? 🚤

Whether you’re fishing, boating, or just soaking up the sun, let’s make sure everyone makes it back to shore safely!

It’s National Safe Boating Week, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources wants to remind you that a great day on the water starts with preparation. Did you know that in 76% of fatal boating accidents, drowning was the cause, and 87% of those who drowned weren't wearing a life jacket?

Before you launch, check off these quick safety essentials:

🦺 Wear your life jacket: Accidents happen faster than you can grab a stowed vest. Put it on before you push off!

šŸŽ“ Check your certificate: In Michigan, you need a boater safety certificate if you were born after: June 30, 1996 (for motorized boats) and Dec. 31, 1978 (for personal watercraft like Jet Skis)

šŸ—ŗļø File a float plan: Let someone on land know where you’re going, who is with you, and when you expect to be back.

šŸ› ļø Inspect your gear: Make sure your boat is in good working order and your communication devices (like marine radios) actually work. Remember, you might not have good cell service on the water.

ā˜€ļø Watch the weather: Check the forecast and water temperatures before you go, and keep an eye on changing skies.

šŸ›‘ Boat sober: Alcohol is a leading factor in fatal boating accidents. Designate a sober skipper!

šŸ’Ø Watch for Carbon Monoxide: Gas engines and generators produce this odorless killer. Stay at least 20 feet away from any boat running an engine, and make sure your onboard CO detector works.

Let’s keep Michigan's waters fun and safe for everyone this weekend! Where are some of your favorite places to go boating or just enjoy the water?

Water hyacinth and water lettuce are currently Michigan Watch List species, but their regulatory status is changing this summer.

Effective June 19, 2026, both aquatic plants will be added to Michigan’s prohibited species list. After that date, it will be unlawful to introduce, import, sell, possess with intent to distribute, or intentionally propagate these species in Michigan.

Some CLMP volunteers may have handled and identified these plants during aquatic plant training at the MLSA conference earlier this month. Both are floating aquatic plants that can form dense mats and impact native plants, habitat, recreation, and water movement.

If you see water hyacinth or water lettuce outside of cultivation, report it to the EGLE Aquatic Invasive Species Program or through MISIN. https://www.michigan.gov/invasives
