Last night was the Decatur-Hamilton Fire Department and Quick Response awards banquet. While the QR doesn't have many awards to present, there is one that I enjoy giving.
This years First Responder of the Year went to a member who truly enjoys his work and is always there to lend a helping hand. He often drops whatever he's working on to go to a call and help in any way he possibly can.
Please help me congratulate Mr. Heath Seelye as our First Responder of the Year.

Today, we are saddened by the news that Kelly Jerue (Weldy) has passed away after a long battle. Kelly was employed as a Dispatcher with Cass County. She was a past member of the Decatur-Hamilton Quick Response Team who served many years answering the calls for others! I remember her as a sassy young lady who put her heart into answering as many calls as possible. She was dedicated to her community and her co-workers. She was knowledgeable, compassionate and sympathetic to all those who required care. Her battle is over but the memories will live on.
Rest in peace Kelly! 🙏🏼

Tonight we had had the honor of recognizing several members of our first responders community.
These individuals came together to save the life of not only one, but two cardiac arrest patients. The calls came minutes apart, but despite hurdles they not only returned pulses, but each individual left the hospital with little or no deficits.
We are very proud of these individuals and proud they choose to serve our community.

Beware of Brushing Scam!

A recent scam has been showing up in many states. We have not had any local reports, but want to make residents aware before you are victimized.

A "brushing" scam is when someone receives an unexpected gift or item not ordered in the mail from a place like Amazon or other company. Examples of gifts include, rings, bracelets, necklaces, Bluetooth speaker, etc. The gift will have the recipient’s address, but not include the sender's information or be from a known retailer. When the recipient opens the package to see what it is and possibly who sent it, there is a QR code to scan to find out who sent the gift.

Once the code is scanned, all the information from that phone will be sent to scammers. They receive all access to the phone. All personal and financial information is accessible to the scammers and often the victim's bank accounts are drained.

The gift can be kept or thrown away, but the QR code should NOT be scanned for any reason. QR code scams are nothing new. These scams show up in all places, including parking meters.

Inform your family members about the scam and avoid scanning any unknown QR codes included in the package.
