We are receiving reports of a scam in which callers claim you missed a court date and now have an active warrant for your arrest. The caller then demands immediate payment to avoid arrest.

🚨The Wise County Sheriff’s Office will NOT call you and demand payment over the phone to clear a warrant.🚨

Don’t fall for it. Scammers may impersonate law enforcement officers and use urgent or threatening language to pressure you into paying.

If you receive a call like this:

* Do not provide personal or financial information.
* Do not send money or purchase gift cards.
* Hang up and independently contact the Wise County Sheriff Office at 940-627-5971

When in doubt, hang up and verify before you pay. A legitimate concern about a court case or warrant can be addressed directly through the appropriate agency—not through a caller demanding immediate payment.

A familiar name with a renewed mission — the Wise County Sheriff’s Posse is back and focused on strengthening the connection between our community and local law enforcement.

The Posse is an independent, civilian volunteer organization that supports the Wise County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies throughout Wise County. While they work alongside law enforcement when requested, the Posse is not affiliated with or a division of the Wise County Sheriff’s Office, and Posse members do not have law enforcement authority.

Their mission is centered around service, trust, and community — including community events, youth engagement, volunteer service, and supporting public safety efforts throughout Wise County.

We’re proud to see community members stepping up to serve and build stronger relationships between citizens and law enforcement. 🤝

Ever wondered what it’s really like to work in law enforcement? The Wise County Sheriff’s Office Citizens Law Enforcement Academy gives members of our community a firsthand look at what it takes to keep Wise County safe.

This FREE 11-week program offers a behind-the-scenes look at the daily operations of our Deputies, Dispatchers, Jailers, and civilian staff, with presentations and demonstrations from Patrol, Crime Scene Investigations, SWAT, and more. Classes are held Thursday evenings from 6:30–9:30 PM, beginning September 10, 2026.

Who can apply?
• Must be 18 years of age or older
• Must live or work in Wise County
• Must complete and pass a background check
• No law enforcement experience is required

🚨 5 TIPS TO AVOID SCAMS

1️⃣ Never pay over the phone.
Law enforcement will never call and demand payment for an outstanding warrant, fine, bond, or other legal matter. If someone demands immediate payment, hang up.

2️⃣ Don’t trust caller ID.
Scammers can make a call appear to come from a legitimate law enforcement agency or government office. A familiar name or number does not mean the caller is legitimate.

3️⃣ Verify before you act.
If someone claims to be a Sheriff’s Office employee, hang up and contact the agency directly using a verified phone number. Don’t use a number provided by the caller, text, or email. 940-627-5971

4️⃣ Don’t click first—think first.
Be cautious with unexpected texts and emails asking you to click a link, open an attachment, provide personal information, or send money. When in doubt, delete it and contact the organization directly.

5️⃣ Pressure is a red flag. 🚩
Scammers often create a sense of urgency—threatening arrest, fines, suspension, or other consequences if you don’t pay immediately. Stop, slow down, and verify. Legitimate agencies will not demand immediate payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, payment apps, or wire transfers.

🔵 Remember:

When in doubt, hang up and verify.
A few extra minutes to confirm who you’re dealing with could save you hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars.
