What started as social gatherings among young men in the 1940s grew into the Decatur Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees). In September 1946, Calvin Pettey and more than 100 other charter members gathered with their wives and guests and were presented with the chapter's charter. Over the years, the Jaycees have supported numerous community events and even raised the funds to build the Decatur-Morg
an County Chamber of Commerce on Sixth Avenue. Although the dynamics of the group have changed since its origination, the work done by the Decatur Jaycees is no less important to the community today than it was over 60 years ago. With a current membership of over 30 local young professionals, it is a commitment to community service that makes serving as a Jaycees so rewarding. Throughout the year, Jaycees organize and host several events that support local nonprofit organizations:
FACES Easter Party (Families & Children Experiencing Separation) held at First Baptist Church each year, Jaycees provide food, fun, face painting, and entertainment for the kids and their families
The Big Deal - Casino night benefiting Habitat for Humanity. The Jaycees are volunteer dealers for the evening. The Decatur Jaycees Christmas Parade - The Jaycees are in charge of organizing the entire Christmas parade each year for the city of Decatur
Habitat Build - The Jaycees will do a day build on one of the Habitat projects
The Decatur Jaycees is a 501(c)6 organization. The Decatur Jaycees Foundation which holds seed money for our non-profit and charitable events is a 501(c)3 organization.
