Senate Bill 293 (SB293) would make it a Class A misdemeanor to interfere with law enforcement, firefighters and EMS at a scene. Interfering with these first responders includes threatening to assault them, actually assaulting them, or staying within 25 feet of them after being told to leave.

Morgan County Coroners Office Has Been Caught Making A Difference

The Morgan County Coroner’s Office in Alabama, led by Coroner Jeff Chunn, is being recognized for its profound impact on the local community that extends far beyond traditional death investigations.

Acting as a vital bridge between tragedy and recovery, the office provides essential support to families in Decatur, Hartselle, and surrounding areas during their most difficult moments. By serving as a personal navigator through the complex legal and medical aftermath of a loss, the Coroner’s Office offers logistical relief and clear, compassionate explanations that help families begin the healing process.

On a personal level, the office is dedicated to protecting the dignity of every resident. This includes the careful safeguarding of personal effects and the tireless effort to locate next-of-kin for those who pass away alone, ensuring no citizen is forgotten.

Their partnership with Legacy of Hope further allows families to find purpose in grief by facilitating organ and tissue donations that save lives across Alabama.

Beyond emotional support, the office serves as a critical guardian of public safety. Through the Morgan County Child Death Review Team, the staff analyzes tragic incidents to identify preventable risks, leading to safety campaigns that protect the county’s youth.

As independent, elected officials, they provide an objective voice for the deceased, ensuring that the truth is documented and that justice is accessible for all families.

From identifying hidden public health hazards to providing immediate crisis intervention, the Morgan County Coroner’s Office remains a steadfast pillar of integrity and care for its community.

In 2018, Last Responder created and organized the very first Medicolegal Death Investigation Professionals Week to shine a light on a profession that has long stood in quiet service to our communities.

We chose the last week of January intentionally - not randomly, not arbitrarily.

It was chosen to honor the moment death investigation officially became part of American history.

Here’s a little history…

The coroner system originated in medieval England as representatives of the Crown, responsible for investigations, oversight, and ensuring legal and financial accountability in death. The system was later brought to North America by the colonists, where it became embedded in early American governance.

On January 29, 1637, Thomas Baldridge of St. Mary’s, Maryland, was appointed as the first coroner in what would later become the United States.

That milestone marked the beginning of a system built to safeguard truth, dignity, public safety, and accountability in death.

This week exists because our profession deserves recognition.

It exists because the individuals who perform this work deserve access to mental health resources, structured training, and clear standards that support professional excellence.

It exists because the work done by coroners, medical examiners, pathologists, investigators, and forensic professionals profoundly matters - even when the world doesn’t see it.

When Last Responder created this week back in 2018, our hope was simple:

• Bring awareness
• Facilitate unity and standardization
• Encourage appreciation
• Advocate for wellness
• Honor those behind the work

Today, we are incredibly proud to see organizations across the nation - including the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners - IACME - and many others worldwide - stand with us in elevating and celebrating Medicolegal Death Investigation Professionals.

What began as a vision has grown into a shared movement of recognition, support, and respect - and we couldn’t be more proud of how far we’ve come, even knowing there is still more work ahead.

To every professional in this field - thank you for your compassion, your resilience, your professionalism, and your unwavering commitment to truth and dignity.

You are seen. You are valued. You are essential.

So please join us - this year and every year that follows - during the last week of January (January 25–31, 2026) to honor the Last Responders who ensure every life, every story, and every death matters.

Do we have any followers from the St. Mary’s area of Maryland??

As the world counts down tonight, many of us are still working - standing with families in grief, honoring the dead, documenting the truth, and carrying stories that never leave our hearts.

To every medicolegal death investigator, coroner, medical examiner team member, transporter, first responder, funeral professional, morgue tech, pathologist, and anyone who stands with dignity beside the dead and compassion beside the living - thank you.

You showed up this year.

You carried stories.

You bore witness to grief.

You made sure people were treated with dignity when it mattered most.

As we step into a new year, may we remember:

We matter.

Our work matters.

And we deserve support, recognition, and care, too.

Here’s to resilience.

Here’s to purpose.

Here’s to a New Year filled with support, standards, and major milestones for our industry.

And to those who supported our mission this year - donors, partners, sponsors, and advocates - your belief in this work helps us push forward when resources are limited and the emotional weight is heavy. You make it possible for us to support the people who carry the hardest stories.

Happy New Year from all of us at Last Responder and Responders Inc. 🖤🤍
