On Monday of this week "HWY 27 Landscape Supply" of Decatur revitalized the PD's landscaping along the street side of the building. Overgrown bushes and trees that partially obscured security cameras were removed. Several new plants and bushes were installed, along with fresh mulch and some drainage stone. We hope this fresh and updated look is approved by all Decatur residents. Copper the rock snake has moved along to retirement. Perhaps in the future we will host another community art project.

The Decatur Police Department has been made aware of some local residents getting text messages similar to this one. We want to take a moment to alert everyone this is a scam and not official court correspondence; regardless how official it may appear.

Note that this “legal document” has no name on it as to who owes the fine(s).

Note that there is no actual location of the incident(s).

Note there are no IC statutes for the offenses, subsequently the three offenses are not related to each, i.e. Toll, Parking, and Moving and would likely be three (3) separate documents or case numbers.

Note the QR code when scanned alerts you to possible scam activity. [We have blocked the ability to scan the actual QR code]

Note the spelling errors, including “Indianapells” rather than Indianapolis.

Lastly, after a basic Google search you can learn there is also no judge in Marion County Indiana named Michael Rodriguez.

This scammer should consider a legal source of employment as a graphic market designer as this “document” has a nice layout, appealing to the reader, and is easy to read! We give you an “A” for effort on the layout, but overall “F” due to your lack of morals and ethics as a basic good human. Decatur, always stay vigilant against scammers and if you believe you or a loved one might be a victim of a scam please report that activity to your local authorities.

Today, Koda brought along Officer Elwell & Chief Ge**er to the Bellmont High School’s Principles of Business Management Class for a debrief meeting for their Kozy Koda project. The students all participated in this project, held specific roles, and put together a really great fund raiser. 350 of the plushy toys were ordered and sold. 100% of the money raised was then donated back into the K9 fund that supports Koda.

Today each student got up and explained their role in the project, along with areas of the business that struggled to areas that exceeded expectations. This project raised nearly $2300 for the K9 fund that operates solely from donations. Great work to each student involved, as well as to the generous donors who purchased these for every resident at Woodcrest Nursing. Those members of our community were filled with joy and all smiles after being visited by these students and given this gift.

Today after the debrief meeting each student and Mr. Lineberry were each presented a department challenge coin as well as a certificate of appreciation in recognition of their dedicated hard work towards this project. We have no doubt these young men will be future entrepreneurs, successful businessmen, or owners of their own operations someday. Go Braves!

The Decatur Police Department wants to urge drivers to use caution while driving through the downtown area. Due to the extreme high winds numerous traffic signals between 5th Street and 1st Street have been blown out of alignment. Due to this, temporary stop signs are being put out along this route by the State Highway Department. INDOT crews will not be able to fix the traffic lights until the winds subside. Please treat these intersections as 4 way stops until repaired.

An additional safety reminder, if you come across any downed power lines stay clear of them and report them to authorities.

The Decatur Police Department is aware of an incident involving one of our officers who parked their marked police car in designated handicap parking spaces at Bellmont High School. This conduct does not meet the standards we expect of our personnel or the trust our community places in us. The officer has been appropriately disciplined and was issued a citation for this offense. We take accountability seriously and remain committed to holding ourselves to the same laws and expectations we enforce. As the Chief of Police, I apologize to our community on behalf of our entire department and reaffirm our commitment to doing better and maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and respect.

Respectfully,

Kevin L. Ge**er
Chief of Police
