On Thursday, July 17, 2025 we will have the distinct honor and privilege of bringing PVT Mack Kidd home to Lawrence County. Pvt Kidd served as one of Merrill's Marauders during World War 2 and was killed in action on July 12, 1944 in Burma. At the time his body was recovered, his identity was unkown. Recently, the US Army was able to confirm his identity and began the process of returning his remains to his family for burial.
Pvt Kidd's flight is scheduled to land in Nashville, TN at 2:45 pm on Thursday. There will be full military honors planeside as his casket is transferred to the hearse for the trip to Moulton. With the help of American Legion Post 25 Moulton, Al, The Alabama State Troopers, and many local fire departments, police, and sheriff's offices along with countless other agencies and departments, we are planning a Hero's Welcome along the travel route. We are planning to leave the airport at approximately 3:30 and will travel south on Interstate 65 from Nashville to the Priceville/Decatur exit #334. From there we will take Hwy 67/Beltline into Decatur then Hwy 24 into Moulton.
While there are many factors that will affect the travel time, we are hoping to arrive at Lawrence Funeral Home around 6 pm. Anyone interested in participating in the Hero's Welcome are encouraged to line the travel route as we pass by. Please be very careful and be aware of other traffic as you gather. We want everyone to stay safe while also being able to show their support and patriotism to Pvt Kidd's family.
The Lawrence County Archives and LCtoday pages have also posted more information regarding the route and the availability of free flags for those who are interested. There is also a post about Pvt. Kidd's military service. Please follow the Archives page for live updates of our location and arrival times along the way.
Pvt. Kidd will lie in state at Lawrence Funeral Home on Friday, July 25 from 10 am to 4 pm. He will be laid to rest near his daughter's grave on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at Friendship Cemetery on County Road 84 in the Bankhead Forest. The graveside service with full military honors will begin at 3 pm.
Please share this post as much as possible to spread the word to everyone along the route in both Tennessee and Alabama.
